Lightpainting - Our Cars

I went outside last night and took a few photos with a higher ISO then what I had been using previously, to try and boost the brightnes of them.

These photos were done at with the ISO setting at 400, and were quite grainy because of my cheaper/beginner dslr (I still like it though).

Here are the two originals




I then copied dads car over the the other photo and made a couple of slight changes with contrast, brightness, noise reduction and I also took out a few little bits of light that weren't supposed to be there.


I also decided that I would play around with the lights again, so here are the two photos of the lights
(Dad has painted his parkers)




these were then cut out and placed onto the photo.


and I then used these photos


vvvvv THis is what happens when you bugger up and flash the softbox towards the camera (luckily I didn't need that bit)


and placed them on it aswell (just because I could)



And after all that I think I prefer the photo without the lights and bonnet done lol
But I thought I would put all that up anyway.

So after tonight's effort I think I'm finally getting there.

What DSLR are you using? What lenses? And can you take a pic of your light box?

Pentax K100D Super, had it for 2 years now (I think)
These were done with a sigma 18-50mm lens


and the softbox is Fotogen 24" (60cmx60cm) from ebay. The sell them for $60


The light I am using is an Ebay special. It is an 60? LED camping lamp, which was about $15 from memory.


They pics were taken at:
focal length of 22mm
ƒ/5.6
30 sec exposure
ISO 400
on a cheap tripod

I have a remote shutter coming soon, so I can get the exposure over the 30 seconds and hopefully do both cars without having to take 2 photos.
And then I should be able to have the ISO back down to 200 to minimise the noise.


I also have a Sigma 70-300 APO Macro Lens
2 External Flashes with wireless remotes

OK, I thought It was time to give lightpainting another go tonight.
I was going to use the timer that I got and try to improve.

Well I decided to put some new batteries into my light.
BING!!! First photo I took on 30 seconds blows out the whole thing...

So after all that it was the batteries that I had put into the light.
I had thought this may be the problem a while ago and put in a few sets and they were all the same. Apparently they were all old and buggered.

So here are a couple I took of Dads turbo capri, something different (looks like a chicks car, but goes like buggery)
It is a fairly windy night, so I only took a couple whole car shots, they were more for just trying things out anyway.





I did play with them a little bit, but not much (brightness, contrast, shadows & highlights)

Goes harder now, had a full engine rebuild and turbo replaced.
Went in for slight repairs and mechanics buggered it up, a few times.
All good now though.

OK, just to make sure that the good ones of the Capri went just flukes because of the lighter colour, I took some of my car again.









I Can't wait until I can go somewhere outside of my backyard and take pics.

Did the little Fiesta last night...Only got a couple in because of the rain, but I was fairly happy with these.

I liked the 2 colours in the sky on this one




If the rain goes away I will try the Dads GT and the Xr8 together tonight because we want it done up as a poster, the ones I did last time were too dark
(which is why i didn't bother to post them up)

We have too many cars lol.

What exactly do u do to make these photo's? just setup that light thingy over the car then take a photo of it?

Im guessing even if i bought one of those light box things i would still need a fancy arse camera to do it?

First ones done out of my backyard,
I am pretty happy with them.

It was a bit different trying to have the car in the right position and trying not to have too many lights in the background, in the backyard this wasn't much of a problem.







Need to loose the P Plates for next time.:thinking:
was also thinking I might try and use a star filter for next time, which should improve the look of the lights

Thanks guys, yeah all Ariel's you can see are just for UHF Radios. (except the one on the Capri, it is just a radio Ariel that doesn't go down)
I can photoshop them out, but I didnt.
It doesn't look as big and ugly in real life either.

The main reason we have them is that they are used on club runs.
Also its good to know where the boys in blue are on the highway.

Yeah, do it. It is fun to experiment with
It is also quite a lot easier then it may appear, I find the hardest part of the whole thing is trying to focus on the cars.

Has taken me a while but I am finally getting results that I am pleased with.

I want to go and find another place to do it as I find the background of this place a bit too distracting.
(also got to remember to take along the bloody 6 star filter )

Find a look out over town. park right on the edge and bring a ladder so you can see the city lights behind your car. Thats what im gunna do for my 1st ones.

Yeah I have thought about that.
The only place I can think of near me is Mt Coot-tha and it is a fair drive from my place.
But I should make the effort and grab a couple of cars from the club I am in to make it worth the drive.
(some have said they are interested in a shoot)

Who wouldnt be! Ever since i saw your pics ive been looking to pay someone to do my car but now that ive worked it out ill try do it myself.
