3d Scans

Started messing around with 3D scanning on the weekend, there are some pretty cool tools out there for it now that werent available last time i looked lol.

the one i've found best so far is based on the xbox Kinect sensor along with software called ReconstructMe.

couple of examples.






Will look at attempting a whole car at some stage, the biggest issue is getting the computer hardware to a place to do it
not sure how well it'd work outside.

then to order a 3d printer to have some fun with the scans

could be a sick and easy way to get shit done up in billet or whatever

Can these be imported into 3dsmax?

rFactor2 is in beta atm, it uses 3ds for the cars

deffinately, it needs to be converted, but it can be done.

anywhere from $1000 to $2000 seems to be the range for a majority of them now.
limited by layer thickness, but i'll give it a crack anyway.

can't recall, the poly counts, but they can easily be reduced.
when scanned its massive, but they can be optimised fairly quickly.

but how good the results are in the typical outdoor / garage have to wait to be seen

As I said on FB a 1/10 scale 'print' of a boxcar would be awesome for a buck that you could then use to make lexan RC bodies. I'd buy a couple!

figured i'd have a crack at the whole car

started with the Territory, which was a fail.
White car = bad apparently.

However, i was doing it outside...

So the BA got the go..
Reflections have a big impact on the ability to scan it, however only really bright reflections (ie. The sky)
applying shodow over problem areas helped significantly.

Once i've got room to get a car back in the garage i'll have another attempt, alternatively, i might try a canopy over the car to see if that can help.
I'd also like to try it at dusk, or later in the evening to see what difference that makes.

cheers for the offer, ordered a 2nd PC last night, just gotta pick up a decent graphics card to drop in it then i can hopefully be a little more portable
was going to get a laptop, but was looking like i'd need a $2k+ laptop to get something capable of doing what i need reliably, $2k on something that *might* work doesn't sound like a good idea

also ordered a 3d printer today, unfortunately there is an 8 week wait, but eh

What sort of video card you after? I may have one lying around.

I need atleast a Radeon HD 5870 (what i've tested on)

A GTX 550 upwards may work too.

A GTX560Ti is pretty cheap nowadays anyway!

So the better the video card the better it can compensate for reflections / scan with higher accuracy? Or is it more a speed thing?

bit of both... the better the video card the better it can process in real time.
the more video card memory, the high resolution and/or bigger area you can scan at a single time.

I'd like to see what a card with 2GB on memory can do, my current one has 1GB and does a reasonable job

Does it use the camera or the infra red? If it's not the actual 'normal light' camera it might work best in the dark?

That's pretty cool. BA pic reminds of when I was doing work experience at Ford back in June 2001 and they let me have a run of their 3D imaging shit that could bring up all the BA parts.

Excuse my ignorance, but why would you want to 3D print any of that stuff?

i wouldn't necessarily want to print any of the stuff i've scanned, its more a matter of working out what does and doesn't work.

in saying that, scale model's are big business, people collect small versions of things they already own, or wish they could own.

just exploring whats possible.
