Buying stuff from the states

Postby Dansedgli » August 1st, 2008, 8:28 am

Is there an official document somewhere with the customs taxes and tariffs and whatever you have to pay when buying stuff and bringing it into Australia? I googled and couldnt find anything.

Im trying to figure out if its worthwhile buying a heap of junk from the US or not.

Thanks,
Dan

If the order is under AU$1000 you don't have to pay import duty and GST. The $1000 includes handling charges, but not shipping. If it's over, the normal rate is 10% GST and 15% Customs Tax on top of that. Also it needs to be a private purchase to not be taxed, items bought by business are automatically taxed.

If you know you have to pay the tax/GST, speak to a customs broker beforehand. When you pay, Customs makes you fill out gay forms for every part you bring in, and specify what category the part fits into. But it's not that easy, there's around 250 categories for automotive gaskets alone. The broker charges around $100 and makes life so much easier.

True it sucks about having to pay extra, but price all the same shit up locally you'll still come out miles in front :D

When Wayne & I imported those TT kits, the seller pulled a dodgy up his end, labelling the parts as non-commercial scrap metal. Pretty funny description really for stock from XS Power

So when the aussie dollar was US 90c, we got the two kits delivered for around the $2300 mark total (wayne can probably provide more detail, I'm guessing shipping was around the $400 mark for six great big fvckoff boxes). And there wasn't really any customs shit to deal with.

Wayne the knt made a profit when he sold his :P
