el xr6 front on el fairmont? easy? (and other noob questions

Postby nstg8a » January 17th, 2009, 3:24 pm

basically i was looking on ebay and theres a few el xr bumpers on there, and it got me thinking lol....
to convert the fairmont front to xr front i know i will need the xr bumper, and bonnet i guess. will any non fairmont one do? (eg futura) or does it have to be an xr one?
do the gaurds have to be changed?
prices seem to vary between $200 and $400 for the bumper, and the only set of lights on there are i think about $200 per side.
then plus paint lol

is it all bolt on? (fingers crossed)

im guessing wrecker prices would make it an unrealistic idea.....

i really dont like the front of the el fairmont, i was thinking of just changing the grill to an ef one, they look a lot better than the el ones and certainly a cheaper option lol. but then i saw that the xr fronts are reasonably easy to find. apart from the fact they all seem to be in victoria... so i would have to factor in coourier costs their as well.

any thoughts?

To fit the XR front, you need the bumper, headlights, indicators, and bonnet. Guards are the same. For the bonnet, you will need either an XR one, or an EF GLi/Futura one. It's pretty much the same as the XR one except the XR one got the bonnet vents. I think you have to change a little bit of wiring for the headlights, and get a bonnet latch from an EF GLi as they don't extend down as far as the Fairmont ones. Other than that it bolts straight on.

sweet, sounds reasonably straight forward, i might start tracking some bits and pieces down, no rush so i can wait for the good deals to come up.

haha, you need to undo the dash surround.
crash course in that is.

undo stereo surround (1 screw behind ash tray)
then it should pop out, assuming its an EL stereo surround :P

then you have 3 screws about the steering wheel, just above the instrument cluster.
one at the bottom of the dash surround just below the fuel popper button.
one just below the door lock button.
3 behind where the stereo surround was.

(i think thats all of them)
then it should unclip from above the trip computer.

trip computer will get removed with the dash surround.
pull it forward and undo the wiring plugs for the fuel/boot buttons, door lock button and trip computer.

it should then come out.
yuou'll then be able to get to the screws for the climate module.
