What should my next car be??

Postby mooseman » January 24th, 2009, 11:50 am

Im buying a car within the next 3 months... just not sure what. Im probably going to veer away from Ford for a change.
Im after a car that has a bit of balls with minimal mods (consistent mid-14s) some luxury appointments, good looks and mainly used as a cruiser. My budget is about $10,000 with $1-2k on light mods...

Does anyone know much about the soarers? What are the V8s like performance wise? Are they that much slower then the 2.5TT versions?

Any other suggestions for cars in my budget? I will look at anything that isn't a holden.

Get a Laurel and put a 1J in it, that would be a sick luxury car for under 10k. Get your velour out!

Get a fully sick mate ss commodore .

If your thinking Commodore's what are you going to aim for?, From my experience VN-VR = shit (because of the buick engine)

VS and VT are good on Power, not so on Reliability and Comfort... if you want comfort try and aim for Calais though... anything else though I don't think is too flash on the commodores.

But more importantly, fords are better ;).

Just save a little more and buy yourself an R32 Skyline GT-R. Found a nice import for $14k - http://www.carsales.com.au/used-cars/pr ... EFD98F57F8.

what about a silvia? FC RX7? skyline gtst?
do you prefer n/a or boost?
honda integra will do flat 15s all day long with just an exhaust, not hard at all to run a low 14.

Skylines are pretty sick bang for buck, R33 GTST's can be had under 10 and it doesn't take much to get one into the 13's.

In your case a boosted import is the go imho.

performance is taking a back seat to cruising ability in this case. I want something that is going to be comfortable to drive 300kms straight in and not give me any dramas. Im not a HUGE fan of R33s purely because they are so common around my area. All the R32s I have been in have been fairly rough as guts. Keep in mind im a 6ft tall 100kg footballer so something like an integra won't really suit. N/A or boost im not really fussed as long as its got some balls and reliability.

You pretty much have to get a V8 Commodore then. IIRC, it's the law!

if you are built like that try fitting in a soarer. They may look big but they are the most deceptive cars ever lol. **** all leg room imo

Friend is about 6ft 4", 120kg and he looked about for ages at all the import pocket rockets. 180's and R32's were no good for him but he eventually purchased one of those BP 1.8T AWD Mazda Familias and had a ball in it. Smashed heaps of gearboxes tho:( Was an awesome little Motorkhana car. Killed everyone.

By the sounds of it your around the same build as me, the only issue i have is wearing a helmet in the car other than that its comfortable.

Every 2nd kent in my area has a Skyline, i think mine is 1 of 4 - 5 on my street? but i dont really give a fark they are sweet cars.

I'd go a V8 Soarer.

The V8's are reliable and theres room inside. I am about 6' 3" and weigh 150ish so if i fit in theres plenty.

I guess the only way is to take them for a drive and test them out... I was a huge fan of my mates R33 GTST manual when I drove that and could use one of them but the stigma that goes with being a skyline driver puts me off... Im leaning towards the soarer at the moment but I will wait until I have driven the TT and V8 models before making my decision.

Another option that has come into my head is a 5.4L 3V V8 BA/BF Ghia... If I was buying a newer car <10yrs I wouldn't mind spendning around $15,000 and could get one for that price...It would be something different and a nice cruiser dumped with some big wheels... but it would also be a bit of a slug...

If it's cruising comfort that you're after, go for a GT Limited Soarer (v8 only). With the full leather, TV etc, they're a great riding car on long hauls, especially with their TEMS system. They're the roomiest Jap coupe out there in my opinion, far far better than say a supra (if you're 6ft like me you'll get leg cramps in a supra), and a bit better than a 300ZX. They're not real fast in V8 form, but they pull "ok" and sound great with a nice exhaust.
If you want to go fast, but lose some luxuries, go for the 1JZ version (2.5TT), they can be found in manual form but they're usually auto. They haul arse after basic mods (200rwkw is easy, 250 not much harder).

Yeh I think I have narrowed my options down to a 2.5TT soarer or a R33 skyline of some description. I will take the V8s for a drive and see how they shape up though...

If you are looking for a awesome cruiser the best best would be any BMW E32 / Mercedes W116 models. Check out youtube videos of the BMW's V12 if you need convincing. Late 80's/early 90's German uber-sedans make Falcons/Commodores look like a comparison between a light saber and a butter knife.

LS400 ftw! Luxury, reliability and they're cheap!

Bit more unique than a Soarer.
