extractors and cat or cam??

Postby thebeast. » February 5th, 2009, 4:52 pm

hey all i have a 97 el falcon, stock bar pod, bigger intake and cat back, i was talking to a guy at local exhaust shop and i can get a set of red-back extractors and a high flow cat for $660 sup and fitted. i was also talking to my bro about getting a cam, $390 then i just gotta get it fitted.
i don't know which one i should do first, I'm a low income earner so it would take me a bit to get the exhaust so i could get the cam sooner but I'm not sure what to do. In the end it will all be done but yeah.
I'm just looking for torque so its better off the line, not to fussed about speeds above 140-150 as i don't take the car that hight (at the moment).
so what should i do. leave it for a few months and do the exhaust or get the cam first. any other ideas would be good.. just looking for acceleration.
Thanks, Paul

Also my brother said the guy at crow cams had a stock el dynod at aroun 90 odd rwkw and after the exhaust and cam dynod again and it was at like 130 odd rwkw. Does that sound about right??

if you do the cam before exhaust, (depending on cam profile) the car will have mega low down torque but will choke uptop.
might even feel like it has less power than the stock cam.

but if you do the cam, then the exhaust, you will notice a massive difference when you do fit the exhaust.

i would do the exhaust first as it would help you decide on the profile you'd like to choose

I suggest getting the extractors & cat first before you get a cam, a larger cam will benefit you more after they have been fitted, if you do the cam first you wont feel much of a difference as you will be suffocating the engine as the exhaust gases wont be flowing quick enough, and yes the 130rwkw sounds about right with an exhaust & cam

Do a search for threads on cams and regrinds and have a read if you want an option to save you money.

I was also in the same situation,
The price of a cam and the benefits seemed to be a no brainer compared to the extractors.
But like others have said you wont get the full advantage of the cam with the standard exhaust manifold.
And iv read that the standard cat is still fine for most applications, as long as its in good condition. Might save you a bit of coin.

Another vote for diff ratio change (3.9 or 4.11 for auto!) if what you really want is more punch off the line. Do a search on this, it's been covered plenty of times ;)

Hijacking counts pretty high now? lol
And yeah 3:27 isnt worth the upgrade in an auto, I think thats what mine had in it stock.
Unless your just doing it for the LSD side of things.
