Ash's Boombox Install

Postby Hybrid34 » January 28th, 2009, 5:02 pm

I finally got around to building my home made 'Ghetto Blaster', took a day n a half to complete, since its to hot to be outside today (42degrees) I thought i'd tell ya'll how i did it.

Inspiration came across when sitting at the beach wanting to listen to music (like all of us do), your typical mobile phone sound is pretty shitty quality) and those portable cd players eat through the D size and C size batteries like an abbo with a maccas meal. So I thought I'd come up with something a bit more powerful and long lasting (yet not so portable for a single person to carry).

Consists of:
12mm MDF wood (6 Pieces)
20MM Particle board Screws
Nails
2 Metres of 12mm Rope (for handles)
White Vinyl Sheeting to cover the wood
PVC glue
Adhesive glue

2 6x9's 240watt Fusion Speakers (got em on speical $25)
35A.H Gel Battery
Panasonic H/U Mp3 player
Ipod / mp3player conector
Aligator clips (to clamp onto battery).

First made the box up
Image

Having a top shelf to place the headunit on
Image

Templates for the speakers
Image
Image

Glue the Vinyl together
Image

Image

Make some wood blocks to support batter...Insert battery, mp3 cables etc..
Image

And Presto, your own beach chick magnet :D ...Hope you guys like it

ABS = spongy brakes, but you'll slow to about 60

non-ABS = lock up at 100 & skid past the roo doing about 95. But you'll look sick doing it

You should be able to pull 2 hours out of it least I rekon. Nice job :) but I woulda put the cd player on the front above the 6x9s so you dont have to go round the back to skip a song (remote!!)/change cd.

Yeah I could have done that, but when your at the beach the sun gets pretty intense n didn't want the heat beaming straight onto the headunit..

That's wicked, good work man!! Quick question, what do you do with it when your not using it with regards to power? Did you wire in an on/off switch, or just simply disconnect the battery?

I did think about it, but solar doesn't charge that well (when tryin to charge a gel battery) and if you do get a good solar pannel its gonna cost a bombshell..

So far i've got 6 and a half hours outta the battery!!!! and the bugger is still going, we'll see how long it lasts at AFD :):)

Not bad but what's with the shape?

Why not just make it rectangular like a real boom box and put the speakers where they are on a boom box and the CD player in the middle? Put the battery in the back still.

You could decorate it so it looks like a boom box, paint a tape door on it, paint the buttons on it. Then all you need is some old school roller skates and a pair of leg warmers.

I like Malakai's idea for the shape.

This is a sweet idea, and 6.5 hours plus out of it is nuts!

haha yeah never thought of that, was kind of a spontaneous thing to do, wanted music for the weekend had 2days to do it, so quickly built something up...
But if i ever do build another one i'll def think about the "original" boombox idea.

Oh and heres a pic of it at the beach :D

ABS = spongy brakes, but you'll slow to about 60

non-ABS = lock up at 100 & skid past the roo doing about 95. But you'll look sick doing it
