Bodgy LPG installs

Postby galapogos01 » March 4th, 2009, 7:56 am

A FATHER whose car exploded, killing his eight-year-old son and severely burning his three other children, is suing mechanics who installed and checked its faulty LPG system.
[--snip--]
Mr Clay, a tyre fitter, bought the car from his former boss at the Bridgestone Tyre Centre in Doveton, mechanic David Beaney. He said he insisted on the LPG system being checked because Mr Beaney had installed it himself, so Mr Beaney arranged a mobile gas cylinder tester, Gary Martin, to come to their workplace.

Mr Clay is also suing a third man, Stephen Young, who gave the Ford Falcon a roadworthy certificate.

Terence Casey, QC, for Mr Clay, said the backyard LPG conversion was described as "dreadful" by a forensic scientist, who found an incorrectly fitted fuel line had cracked and released gas into the car.

Look out for dodgy installs!

I hate reading sht like this. My 2nd gas tank is right behind my front seats. 200 litres of the stuff would go boom pretty good.

Yeah, with the initial discharge upon releasing the trigger, it's an obvious smell inside the car. If there were a significant leak, you'd think the smell would be overpowering? If my car suddenly smelt very strongly of gas I'd pull the fukk over & run!

Happened at least 5 years ago from memory. It was a XF, and he had just filled up gas after picking up the kids from their mum's house. The kid that died told his dad he could smell gas but his dad lit a cigarette anyway and the XF went kaboom.

If the guy is a smoker he probably doesn't have much of a sense of smell. What a fuckhead anyway for smoking in the car with his kids in the back seat.

Well, if this is the case, the dad doesn't deserve a cent. Sure it's bad he lost a child and had a couple more injured but what kind of moron would light up a cigarette after being told they can smell gas.

I disagree Dez, he had every right to light a smoke in his car.

The fact that he did it with kids in the car saying they can smell gas makes him a dickhead, but it all boils down to the fact the car wasn't safe, and yet got passed for a RWC & the Gas cylinder check.

Its the "Professionals" in this case that did a sub standard job and as a result has indirectly killed a child and injured others. The cigarette was just the catalyst for it.

wonder if he went for a dodgy RWC on purpose?

also... since when do mobile LPG tank testers check the whole install?
its not their job to check the whole car, they check/test the cylinder, stamp it and thats their job done.

The guy sounds as dodgy as the gas conversion, now he's trying to make a dollar of it.

IMO - no one should smoke in a car with children.

What I meant was he did have the right to light one up, but it's just stupidity to light it up AFTER being told that it smells like gas.

I think the issue with the gas release must be related to the relief valve venting gas into the boot instead of outside, and therefore it got into the cabin. How else would filling it let gas into the car? Hence the claims about the tank inspector not doing a proper job.

Either way the dodgy installers should be stopped - whether the guy is a dick for smoking or not the car was still made unsafe by the same people.

the tank should have a releif valve on it, and there should be in a sealed unit with its only outside air contact a tube out the side of the unit to under the car
