Another reason why i love my ford....

Postby EdFairmontGhia » January 5th, 2010, 6:49 pm

For those of you on my facebook, you might remember a few problems i've had with my ED.
Managed to go through 2 altinator belts in 1 week, but with a little help from PANTIC and the dirty old RACV man I was able to get back on my way to Wilson's Prom on New Years Eve night.

On the way back the car decides to stop using 4th gear (auto)... fair enough i slow the car down and drive it along the hwy at 60km to get it to my next destination.... I take a look under the bonnet call a few mates and try to work out what the problem might be... couldn't really do anything..... Car is resting for a couple of hours.... Take it for a drive and 4th starts working...

i got the car back to Geelong from Gippy, while being very careful with the gear changes as i could feel it wanting to slap real bad... The box has been slapping for a while, but i figured if i drove it nicely it would be nice back and not break..

Today the wife drove the car a few kms from home, then tells me the car won't go into 3rd gear anymore. She manages to drive it at 30km back home where it now awaits my decision... to save or not to save???

Anyone with a reliable gearbox and the energy to assisst with a swap? Or part the car out, hoping people are still wanting the sickness of a ghia interior????? :(

Boxes are cheap. I'm kind of in the same wagon with my boat. Or something like that. Get a wrecker box & maybe pantic can do the swap?

Yeah as long as the fluid looks alright its pretty safe. I bought a 2nd hander off Effalcon a few years ago and Mum is still driving it 11ty kms a week for work with no issues.

hmm its sort of doing what my reco'd gear box is doing. Its limp home mode on the gear box. Mine is due to the speedo cog being on the way out and the gear box registering it as a fault and thus I get limp home mode for the first 15-20 mins of my driving. At the local wreckers here in ippy you can get a BTR for about 300 bux....non reco'd. Surprised too was that there is no speedo cog after market for my EB. You have to go directly to ford. There is a second part that also is possibly doing it but all up for me those parts in total are 80 bux roughly for the lot from ford.

Ill Stick with my ford! After all unless you got enough money lying around you just dont know what your going to buy next. It could be a really really really big lemon and worse then what you got.

Have you actually checked the oil level? What colour is the oil and when did it last get a service?

Look at your car. Now back to mine. Now back to yours. Now back to mine. Sadly, yours isn't mine. But if you stopped buying dodgy cars and bought an ED, yours could be like mine. Look down. Back up. Where are you? ...You're on BoostedFalcon, reading the signature your signature could be like! Anything is possible when your car looks like my car... I'm on a computer.

Yeah I checked the oil.. It appears to be full when i check the car while warm. The colour is a light brown very clear... I serviced the gear box about 3 years ago...

Today I went to drive it and it would only give me 1st.... not a good way to drive. reving the car past 5krpm then putting it in neutral to glide where i want to go...
Now it's home awaiting it's fate.. I think a change over of box will be where i'm heading

1. Check fluid level/condition.
2. Adjust fluid level/condition if necessary.
3. If no good source 2nd hand 'known ok' gearbox <200, new fluid.
4. Get Pantic to fit it for bugger all.
5. Drive the car for 5 more years.

Don't even remotely consider reco-ing it. Actually, phone up for a quote for reco, fluid, labour just for lol value....

a good way to check oil condition is to smell it, if it smells sweet its ok, if it smells sour it's burnt and fkd..

Listen to this!

Fark spending 1-2k (ie probably more than most boxcars are worth) on a full reco.

I don't fully understand how an electrical inhibitor switch could make a trans slip. I'm no auto expert tho.

because the gearstick only runs through the box and is connected to the switch then the wires from there go into the ecu and back to the the solinoids in the box thats how they work. and in the switch it has pins that contact when they have water or dirt or bent it makes the solinoids confused which makes it try and select the wrong gear and worse case it tries to select 2 gears that makes it slip. try pulling your trans fuse out it will stay in one gear all the stick does is tell the inhibitor switch what gear you want
