G'day,

Kudos for being interested in getting urself an apprenticeship.

I'm a second year mature age panel beating apprentice. I know that when I started my apprenticeship (at 22yo) that was the starting age for mature age apprentices. I don't know what the age for mature age apprentices is now. First year I was getting approx $450 after tax, now second year is about $505 after tax.

At my same work, there is a bloke the same age who is completing his final year as a spray painter and is only just getting more than me (unsure if that was with a bit of o/t or not).

Even though being a mature age apprentice gives me a higher wage, I still wish I had started it at least 6 years ago, would've been on shit loads more by now.

Start an apprenticeship asap, mature age or not... definitely worth it.

Josh.

is it true the government pays part of your wage as an apprentice? like a percentage goes straight to the workplace to encourage them to use apprentices?

I know with us, every 6months for the first 2 yrs of your apprenticeship you get $500 and then ontop of that, 12 and 24months you get and extra $500. So in total, $2000 not bad if i say so

false the laws have changed in VIC. no longer get Tools For Your Trade ($800) and the Wage Top-ups have changed, im not sure of exact amounts however they are respective of ur yr (ie 1st yr top ups are more than 2nd yr) and accomodate the removal of TFYT

if u want exact details ring an appreniceship agencies

gee i remember when doing my mechanic apprenticeship and taking about 170 home about 10 years ago. i work 3 jobs at present on the weekend i can take home 550 bucks from my extra 2 jobs and they are jobs you don't need any experience in apart from a MR truck licence which i got free through the job i do during the week. during the week i work 4am - 12.30pm at home on the couch at 12.45 just work in a food distribution warehouse and take home 700 bucks. i have been looking at doing another apprenticeship too either electrician or boilermaker but just don't know because of the pay rate.

All i can say is, you'll get good money on a big union site. Thats pretty much about it.

Every guy i've known and worked with who has done their apprenticeship on a big site has been useless at their trade.

If you want to be good at your trade, try and work with a smaller company, you'll learn a hell of a lot more and wont just be some qualified guys monkey and bitch for your whole apprenticeship.

I wouldn't trust any of my mates from trade school who worked on a union site to change a light bulb in my house.

Im a apprentice sparky, commercial/ industrial, not auto. Im through a group training setup which has its pros and cons. youve got flexibility on where and who you work with, if you dont like a company you can ask to be placed somewhere else etc. Im a 4 year now, will be out of my time 6-8 months. I started of as a first year 17 on $6.36 an hour, 2nd was just under 9 i think. Ive been with the same host contractor since ive started and they have been pretty good to me.

The last 2/3rds of my 3rd i got on to a new agreement with my host which gives me extra pay on top of the basic group training wage. i was on 20 bucks an hour as a third year plus travel allowance, when it was booming was on a 4 floor fitout doin 55 hour weeks taking home 1100-1200

Im 4th year now on just under 24 bucks an hour plus $22 a day travel allowance if i drive to site.
