Living in Vic with SA Licence/car...

Postby AaronEF8 » February 5th, 2011, 5:23 pm

Hi Guys,

So I've been living in Melb for a while now, I kept my SA licence (and want to keep it) and have an SA plated car. I know I'm meant to change to Vic rego after 3 months, but I'm just working here for a few weeks, Officer..

Anyway, does anyone know what the go is with me owning a Vic-plated car?
VicRoads says it's a TSA (Transport SA) issue, and I've asked TSA 3 times, with 3 different answers, a 'yes that's fine', a 'your rego MIGHT be cancelled' with no clarification on what 'might' means, and 'has to be done within 7 days or it will be cancelled'. When I say about mates in SA who've had interstate rego'ed cars, TSA says 'oh that's not true'. However, they also told me to change the date on the transfer papers so I didn't get a fine for being late when I transferred rego for my new car... Righteo.

For the record, changing plates to SA involves a bigger roadworthy test in SA than a RWC Vic, they put the car on a 4 wheel brake dyno, and do a 5 gas analysis for instance. But SA cars don't need a RWC when they're sold, and we can pay our rego every 3, 6, 9 or 12 months.

Secondly, defects. Can Vic cops defect my SA car as easily as they can Victorian cars? SA has a few different rules and testing procedures regarding ride height, wheel size, exhaust noise, rust, window tinting etc etc, none of which effect me now, but the roadside testing procedures are more thorough in SA than Vic, so they're less likely to be done. I imagine if I got a major defect, I'd have to go back to Regency in SA to have it inspected. Pain in that arse.

Best bet's to go with the "but I'm just working here for a few weeks, Officer.." or im visiting a mate/family.

Whats your address on your licence? SA or Vic?

Iv lived in Vic all my licence  and have kept my car in SA plates and rego and never had any trouble. (Vic licence)

Vic cops can defect you, though it only affects you driving the car in Victoria and you have to get it sorted in Victoria. Though they can mark it with an Interstate Defect or something.

I'v never been defected and not sure if it would work- But have thought if I did get defected in Vic, of handing in the rego or letting it run out, then getting a fresh SA rego.

Thats only when transferring a car from interstate to SA isn't it?

Which is what he means. He's talking about if he got a Vic car or transferred his SA car to Vic. Then wanted to go back to SA later it'd need all that shit

I had my car on VIC rego for 8 years while I held a Tasmanian drivers licence. I just pulled the old "My old girl lives over here, and this is the car i leave at her place for when I come over. It's registered where it's garaged, not where I live" In all that time I think I was only asked twice. Given both rego and licence were in my name in different states at different addresses I would have thought they'd ask more often.

Yeah thats right, I forgot to add that. Cars under 10 years old are cheaper in Vic, plus the rego is over $100 cheaper, and I reckon SA plates are why I get cut off and tail-gated more often lol.

I've had to get it out for the cops 5 times now, though 3 were for RBTs, the other 2 were in my XE, the same plates in Victoria are cancelled, and 2 cops couldn't read 'SA - The Festival State' on the bottom of my plates.
Whats your address on your licence? SA or Vic?

The address on my licence is SA, I assume if I changed it to a Victorian address I'd need a Victorian licence?

I don't think that would work, my old man bought a Ford Courier that had a major defect on it for no windscreen, the owner sent the plates into TSA, when my old man went to get it re-registered, they told him that chassis number still has a defect on it.

Apparently you can register interstate stolen cars in SA though. You can tranfer cars into your name as long as you know the address and number plate of the car.
