What could I do?

Postby SupeR » January 20th, 2011, 3:58 am

Had a blowout on the way over to a mates place to pick up the new tires because I was too impatient and decided the bald back tire would make the short drive to his.

On the way over went through a roundabout a little quick on a tyre I thought would hold and ate shit for it- I was completely fine, and the car still drove. engine sounded a little smoother -.- but the whole left side was wrote off, ripped up bad, big dints in the roof, window smashed.

Going around to my mates to check it out today, so will post photo's then.

If the engine isn't to damaged how much would it cost/take to transfer it over to a new car- I have (had?) a 96 ef Ghia, stock. and Iv seen some pretty cheap high k ones around in alright condition, that look almost the same. I thought of getting an el or trying to find a cheap xr6 though if possible having the same looking car would be ideal.

Il post more of whats actually wrong when i find out today. But would it be worth doing, or better just spending a little more on something else :\ ?

insurance?

a high k car isnt always the best option even with a new engine especially if you're on a budget. high k cars can have alot of worn parts you dont normally think of. eg. bushes, ball joints, linkages, calipers, springs, shocks/struts the list is huge.

just make sure you find one that has been looked after and get someone who knows what they are doing to check it over first.

to answer your question though. an engine conversion is pretty straight forward. ring and get quotes first. they will have to pull 2 engines out and put one back in. might get pricey if you're paying for someone to do the whole job.

good luck.

when i was looking at getting someone to put a motor into my eb most places charged about 450+ for labour,
just depends where you go some places might even be cheaper.
just ring around like sdoylie said and get some quotes.

sorry to hear about the car to mate

if you are not able to do the job yourself, and have to pay around a grand for it to be done, why not put that grand into a car with lower km's in good condition, you don't have to swap engine then?

Yeah exactly, I plan to do the job myself, well at least attempt. I'v got the time, just not the knowlage yet. Hoping its not to tricky ,as its the same car.

I allready had new breaks, bushes, shocks ready to go. which is one reason I thought of just doing a straight change over.

But yeah id be definitely getting it checked over before hand.

Not sure on the Insurance front- First guy I spoke to said there was little that could be done (in his eyes) but said they would get back to me soon :\

id say as soon as any insurance company hears the 'i drove on a bald tire, i thought it would be ok' they will happily rip up your policy.

for what e series ghia's go for i reckon just buy another tidy one. as said, by the time you stuff around swapping everything over you probably will have paid for a decent one anyway.

Any issues with putting an EF engine in to a EL?

Picked up an allright el yesterday, has new muffler system, extractors, shocks, tires.

Plan to change the extractors over to mine and then drop it straight in to the new one.

Probably be best off parting it out, then buying a new one.

ended up buying a 97 EL falcon for a k- Has new shocks, springs, tires. The paints allright, only downside is the bonnet, front and rear bars- Which all of mine are fine.

Anyone know if Il have to switch the wiring loom over?

Any other problems I could come in to swapping the engine in?
