Noob question bout ricers

Postby G3R3N » January 24th, 2008, 6:15 pm

Was having a doob with a mate n we had to pop the bonnet on his Mazda 323 vv
Image
And the engine bay looks more or less like this vv
Image

My question is: if the headers are at the front of the engine, how does the tailshaft hook up to the crankshaft??? Chain driven??
Whereas, on the Fords, the engine is inline with the tailshaft etc...
I have no idea how this engine setup could drive the wheels... Even if it's FWD...

Can anyone please shed light on this most likely simple engineering for a dumbass??? thanks
Chris

I highly doubt the engine bay in his 323 looks like that, but I'll play.
The gearbox is sideways.
Axles with CV joints go into it.
Surprisingly, because there is no drive at the tail end of the car, there is no tailshaft.
There is no diff, because you don't need anything to turn the drive 90 degrees, because it already is.

its called east west mount or something like that it is basically the same except the tailshaft is c.v joints wich go straight to the wheels

so your gearbox is your diff aswell

i know what you mean by the qustion and if you ever are unlucky enough to have to change a clutch in a fwd car youll see its actually a easy little system and as i said looks pretty much the same as a normal one

Steady, no that engine is not my mate's.. lol but yeah there for reference
So the gearbox is much smaller in these than in an E-series for example?
And then how do u work the gearbox? Is it electric or still mechanical..?

Have a look at this:
http://auto.howstuffworks.com/differential1.htm

Will give you the best idea of what is happening.
Wether the gearbox is bigger or smaller depends on the car configuration and what sort of engine is being used.
It is still an entirely mechanical system.
It's really hard to give more detail without giving heaps more (somewhat boring) engineering information.

One thing though - don't believe anyone who flat out says front wheel drive is crap. EVERY drivetrain configuration has positives and negatives.

FWDs are crap to do engine swaps on :P
Namely if that FWD is in an 85 astra, I don't recommend it.
