Gearbox slippage/non-responsiveness

Well then.

Had the car for two months and all's been fine until last week.

First off; it's got the 4 speed auto. It started slipping during the change from 1st to 2nd and thumping into 2nd much like the old hydraulic 3's and all other changes were okay.

Earlier today I went out to do the shopping and was sitting at the lights on the way home when the speedo died and the car lost a lot of power. Pulled over to see if I could do anything and determined that the gearbox was stuck in 3rd - would not change on it's own. Using the shifter I can get it to change through 1st, 2nd, 3rd, but it REFUSES to hit 4th. It slips between 1st and 2nd intermittently and 2nd and 3rd constantly and as I said, no 4th at all.

It won't change gears at all on it's own in D, and the moment I move the shifter from any other position into D, it defaults into 3rd and won't move.

So, basic run down of symptoms:
- Will not change gears automatically.
- Defaults and stays in 3rd while shifter is in D.
- WILL NOT change to 4th under ANY circumstances.
- Gears can be changed manually, but every change (up or down) slips and squeals the tyres if too much revs (changing like a manual when I must drive it now lol).
- Happened after sitting still at the lights for a few seconds.

Oh yeah, the speedo is working again (?) and it sounds like there's a strange clunk/gurgle sound from the gearbox when changing from N or P to 1st while stationary.

I've got VERY limited resources because of Xmas and NYE, I work casual so I haven't had work for a week and a half - and need the car to get there... So I'm pretty screwed.

could be the little inhibitor switch on the passenger side of the box.

They dont like water, or anything at all.

its getting stuck in limp home mode.

grab another inhibitor switch and see how you go./

How's the fluid level? Does sound like its stuck in lhm

Topped it up on the side of the road and it still did the same.

Let her cool down for a couple of hours and it's back to normal. Inhibitor switch it is! I'll whack one in next week when everything's open again.
