BA+ turbo vs NA differences

Postby misk » February 8th, 2012, 6:37 pm

the xr6t forums is bout as exciting as a house brick, so thought id pick use **** brains.

what are the differences between a non turbo BA+ vs a turbo model.
im more after info on things like suspension, brakes etc.
as far as the police are concerned, you can fit a turbo to a non turbo model as long as it matches in areas such as safety.
so the more info you can spill on this the happier i'll be :)

yeah i remember reading it, but just wanted to get clarification on any actual differences from the factory.
sounds pretty straight forward and a much better option to do things legally rather than the e-series way lol.
i think its about time someone had a decent crack at a ghetto BA. found an ex taxi for $700 and can get an engine to put BF2+ internals into from jollys for $160 :D

Yeah they just reflash the standard ecu, boost controller looms are already there on certain models. I think I read something about the models with fog lights have the same xr6 turbo loom but I'm not too sure on that...

Bentley had an XR6 turbo ecu, turbo taxi would sick do it.

NA motors arnt great for boost due to the compression and weak rods(I think) they can take little over standard boost but if you want big power they won't be happy.

Also didn't the turbo model get slightly bigger brakes or was that a factory option?

It's ok kester, ill get another engine that hasn't done a million ks and fit F6 pistons and rods, weld a t4 flange and a gate pipe to the standard manifold and fit my GT42 with a gas research system. Easy 400rwkw :)
I'm speaking to the guy with the $700 taxi and will pick it up when my 2jz sells on ebay

Sounds like you have the engine covered, heres some other bits-

1. The manual doesn't indicate any turbo/na differences for the 4speed 93LE auto
2. Manual trans have different ratios in the T5Z, BF obv have the T56.
3. Turbo tailshaft has CV's instead of Unis
4. Turbo Diff is M86 vs M78, pretty sure the turbo got the V8 half shafts
5. Normal BA front brakes are 298mm with 2 piston PBR calipers, BF the turbo got the 330mm XR8/Terry rotors, same calipers (diff slide/mount bracket)

Sweet, I'm only worried about ba but that's kind of info I'm looking for. Thanks man.
Sounds like it will be easy to do it legally as there really isn't that much different

Also, can BTRs from eseries be bolted up? I would use a manual controller, so the ecu wouldn't be connected, but would the speed sensor speak to the ba ecu and would the ba ecu crack the shits with no gearbox to control? Ie would it change anything fuel or spark related?

Eseries BTR will bolt up.
Utes had a normal speedo transducer so its possible.
might just need to get the BA ECU flashed with a manual BA Ute tune or something.

but yes, gearbox faults can cause issues, Glenneaux dealt with this years ago, pretty sure he was only getting a certain throttle % allowed, or a RPM limit as the PCM assumed it was in neutral.

Apart from the bottom bell housing bolts they would bolt up. Dunno about all the sensors &that.

BA's don't have a gearbox speedo transducer- its done by ABS instead.

I remember reading a thread on XR6T forums once about tough BTR 4speeds years ago and apparently the E-series planetaries are stronger than BA+.

Pretty sure BA Utes were the exception to the rule regarding speedo signal.
Possible that its only in certain combos though?

I think you could get a BA ute without ABS, so its probably those models. My XR6T ute doesn't have a speedo transducer.

When i put a manual in my xr6t it would only do 40kmh or so until it cracked the shits and got confused.. flash tuner fixed that up tho.

I think the turbo's also have different exhaust valves/seats than NA? not sure how necessary they are though.

I thought the btr's were a bit better in the turbo's? would explain alot if they aren't tho.

BA shifter cable goes on the left hand side of the box as opposed to the right on the E-Series. You would need to extend the shifter rod that goes through the middle of the Inhibitor Switch or change it all together if you're cluey enough, so that you can mount the shifter to it. Also, the bell-housing is slightly different as it has a cable bracket bolted to it, but I guess that's no biggie as well if it's going to be Misk-Spec.

Are you buying the ex-cab with the busted auto?

lol shifty sunny, you're gonna buy a taxi and take over melbournes premier escort services.
anyway, i think the differences are small enough to pretty much whack a turbo on with a pretty standard setup and not have to worry about trouble from the cops in terms of actual differences. stuff like stronger diff etc is going to matter to me, but not to a policeman, but things like brakes and safety gear will, so being less differences in that area is a plus.
