e series roadworthy woes

Postby misk » June 5th, 2012, 9:51 pm

Can anyone get me a dodgy roady?
Lot j/k

I'm curious to hear about what some mechanics have focused or picked on when doing a roady for an e series.
Or perhaps ppl could list things that should always be checked or replaced when going for a roady, not like a windscreen, something more related to e series.
maybe I can fix some problem areas before getting it checked or something.

Its generic. Brakes, tyres, windscreen, leaks, shocks.

Sort that gear and its usually pretty good.

Make it look stock and brand new and you should be sweet.

Yeah I know the deal dan but it's been a while and I've forgotten what they like to look at in bigger cars. This info I'd good though, keep it coming :)

Probably depends who you go to more than anything

A place I went to told me the windscreen wipers didn't cover enough of the windscreen?? and that the springs weren't standard cos the car was sitting 15mm too low he reckoned? Springs and wipers came from the factory exactly how he seen them... also didn't like that the k-frame was wet, caused by a leaking water pump.

Went somewhere else and it passed strait up, guy just checked that the brakes worked and that the tires had tread. Checked all lights and told me I needed a new high beam.

i havent had many needing balljoints but all have needed balljoint boots (torn)
leaks. which most dont care that much. as long as its clean when they look.
you could have a brand new engine with zero leaks. but if its still dirty they will say leaks.

Yeah I'll degrease it at work, it's pretty clean anyway.
Thanks for the help so far, this is all the shit that I forgot after focussing on all the biggererrer stuff.

I'm sure this info will help quite a few others also.

An oil leak is only not RW if it dripping a certain amount onto the ground over a certain amount of time. The rough guideline is a puddle the size of a 20c coin over 20mins. The usual things for an e-series to fail an RWC for are freeplay/torn boots in the front lower ball joints, freeplay in front wheel bearings, freeplay in tie-rod/tie-rod ends, upper & lower rear control arms, seized brake callipers, corroded/loose baffles in mufflers

I had to change brakes and rotors, windscreen, exhaust, and bleed brakes for my last roady. Was surprised that it passed first shot on everything suspension wise...

I had them nocked on an ea we used as a work runaround but it did have nearly 1.5 million klms on it

I got pinned previously for - yellow headlights, shit rattling in the cat, turns out it was bits of stem seals from a mate's ed the exhaust was on before, ball joints, brakes, rear brake covers(the big steel things that go around the diff so you can't see the rotor from under the car), car had a miss, too low, tires, oil leak, shagged rear windscreen tint.

Make sure all the head lights, brake lights and indicators are working aswell

If everything lights up you're done. If it's on fire you probably should have taken it to an auto electrician.
