Death of a forum? Xfalcon vs ozfalcon

Postby nstg8a » March 19th, 2013, 6:24 pm

I'm sure the members on here that are also members on xfalcon have seen what happened on xfalcon over the last week or two, for those that don't, xfalcon was sold to an American partnership that basically only runs forums for revenue.
This lead to 99% of the long term members jumping ship to support the new forum, created by some of the original xfalcon members.
http://Www.ozfalcon.com.au

The reason behind this thread is two fold, one, obviously to raise awareness of the new forum, and secondly, just a reminder for people not to take things for granted.

Is boosted controlled by one person? Or a team? I know we have admins and everything, but who name is actually on the domain title?
As that's all it took for seano to sell out xfalcon.
Even though it was supposedly a joint ownership deal, because the domain was in just one persons name then no one else has a leg to stand on.

This is already a spin-off of another forum, which was in turn spun off from an international one.

wasnt aware of what happened to XFalcon... certainly interesting as they had such a decent following.

In terms of the controling of the main aspects of this site, my name is on everything.

If there came a time where i wanted to step down, i'd hand it to someone within the club to control
but in saying that, theres SFA to do.

its not like it takes bulk amounts of time/resources :)

Theres too many ford forums. Fk them all off I say.

Who needs a forum with 10 members??

Honestly if AFF wasn't run by a pack of downies I'd say everyone should just use that.

xfalcon was a good site, was originally set up for XD to XF but recently opened to all X-series.

Then sold.

Sad IMO, but Meh.

Way too many forums around. You don't need a seperate forum for every make/model.

Central place for all wins IMO.

I hate it how I have to jump on here and browse through 3 different forums to see build threads, on AFF there's a million different forums for different makes / models etc, then other forums - then there's remembering passwords and shit like that.

Sucks balls.

Most domains are held either by a company or an individual depending on the way it's all set up.

I helped set up a new site for one "club" and had the domain in my name for a while. Then I left (aka felt like I got shafted) and transferred it to someone else's name.

I agree though, there are too many out there. In SA there's at least 4 or 5 different clubs or chapters of a national forum. Too hard to keep track of it all.

Don't sell this one :-P seems to be one of the best from what I've seen.

Opened up to all x series, and advertising added to make it more sellable.

Apparently ad revenue was $350ish a month.

I know right - and that still wasn't enough cash for them?! Even if they got $10k they would have made that money in a few years assuming ad revenue stayed at the same levels.

Amazingly short sighted, or someones hooked on the shards.

I think seano just wanted out, and wanted as much cash out as he could get in one hit.

It was always supposed to be a not for profit set up, any funds raised were uaed to pay costs, pay for banners and stuff. Even the nz rep got sent a xfalcon banner to use at meets/shows.

And people were happy to donate their time to help, now its being run purely for profit, whos gonna want to donate their time now the funds are headed off shore.

Makes me curious to see what aff revenues would be, they seem to be purely run as a business.

And have massive amounts of sponsors and advertising.

Their staffing costs would be high also.

I imagine they would need a team of special needs carers running around putting corks on everything sharp for their retarded moderators.

Only 2 sponsors on there though - and going by the activity of the forum, that seems pretty damn high! I certainly wouldn't pay it.
Great forum, but does not seem hugely active (enough) to justify those amounts...

Justin, the hate is because it was never really his to sell, it was always a joint ownership deal, was just his name on the domain title.

To be honest I'm stunned it sold for that much, and somewhat dubious about it. One of the other members did some research and worked out it was valued around the 6-7k mark on some flipping website, and it didn't sell on there, so I don't see why someone would pay more.

And unless the new owner plans on charging for access, or upping the merchandise sales or something, then it seems a pretty poor investment idea.

ummmm...lol @ 10k for a forum. forums are more for builds and support where neither need to be live and can be hours/days between posts where people who want to be more social move to facebook groups.

I offered to host AFF for free same as i did offer to John here just cause i like to support the community.

They were saying they have a dedicated server and with the specs they showed it would roughly cost them 200$-300$ a month. Pretty sure they get that back in advertisement as it is. shame all these sites are hosted in .AU. Reason is cause noone offers any decent servers with massive limits and decent bandwidth.

I could host them on a monster server on our 10mbps fibre (dont forget we are an ISP).

From what I know, AFF sponsors pay a fair bit PA to be on there.

It certainly pays for all those before mentioned "corks"

The way aff protects is sponsors they would have to be paying top dollar.

If you mention a non-sponsor in anything other than a negative light (or speak ill of a sponsor) you get the banstick.

I absolutely fucking love boosted because we don't cater to the lowest common denominator.

There was supposed to be a changeover to an aussie based server with the new owner, since then xfalcon is goneski.

I've never seen that. I've never been given a warning for calling out sponsors when they make a "the best" claim without factual evidence.
I loathe marketing spin and always call BS whenever an opportunity presents itself.

The only warning I've been given over there was for saying I wished there was a myxomatosis that targeted the 'extremist' gene.
Apparently that's not on as I was barracking for chemical weapons. :cray:
