I should be in Melbourne on the weekend dropping off the TT kit to its new owner :D

Dave knows fark all about shimming the cam up. I've only gone as far as swapping the rocker assembly over (with -jjM-), but for the cam he said something about zip-tieing the timing chain/wheel position into place, & then there's only one way for the cam to drop in.

I'll drop in for a bit ("support") depending on the time...

oic

if this gets rolling then yeah, feel free to come around i suppose.

i dont know what the dealio with the little plastic retainers in the head gear for the shims, other than that i know that the shims that i've got have to go in the rockers and cam gear/chain have to not move, same goes for the crank gear.

im also not familiar with the chain tensioner thingy mabob

i also dont have a torque wrench for the rocker gear bolts..

Torque wrench isn't needed for the rocker gear ;)

As for doing them up, I didn't do them as the manual suggested (going from the middle-out torqued to 12-14nm from memory), I did them up finger-tight from the middle-out, then finger-tight again from the middle-out, repeating this until all were finger-tight, and then tightened with the wrench from the middle-out, repeating this until all were tight with the wrench. That way all the bolts were tightened evenly so there's no possible warpage (or vibration for loose bolts) from any possibly uneven bolt tightness. A medium-sized wrench will do the job.

Coat hangers work really well for the timing chain and plenty of places to attach it to.

Ive done a few cam swaps with Doug.

You cable tie the chain to the cam wheel. Undo the cam bolt. Pry the cam wheel off of the cam. Rip the rocker gear off. Pull out the cam. Put the new one in. Replace the rocker rack loosely, pry the cam wheel back on the cam. Tighten the rack up.

The shims go above the lifters under the rockers. Take out lifter, put shim on top, replace lifter.

^^^ and expect it to rattle like fark for 20-30 seconds while the lifters are "dry" & attempt to lube-up with oil again, it'll sound b-a-d but it's normal.

Important note with the lifters - one end is solid, the other has 3 small dashpot holes (I think it's 3? Might just be 1?). Make sure the holes end up inside the rocker arm otherwise you've put them in the wrong way.

okay i think im down with the process, its just the lifters and the tensioner and getting the camin the right way, getting it all tdc and shit....

yeah i've seen the lifter, i've got rocker gear on my lawn...

i pulled the shim out of one of the rocker arms and there was a plastic retainer that holds the shim in, which promptly fell to bits on me.

these will have to obviously come out before extra shim goes in??

Btw, before you take the cam out, crank the engine until the cam notch is pointing at 12 o clock.

Its a bastard to put the cam back in otherwise.
