Damaged car auctions: they shit me!

Postby nothin suss » March 25th, 2008, 4:12 pm

Hey,

Just want to vent about Damaged vehicle auctions and the prices people pay...

I have been to numerous over the past few months, wasting half a day at a time watching crap cars sell for heaps!

Im after a 5.0litre EB-EL NC-NL type car, damaged or not.

-I have seen 3 sacked NC's go for $1800+ and today witnessed a damaged front and rear repairable write off 1997 NL Fairlane go for $3600...
What the hell? It was rooted, not even worth putting back on the road.
-EB wagons stacked well in the front or rear, $1200+
-Those crappy old mid-80's magnas with front end damage for $1000? WTF?
-VR V6 commodores for $2000, why would you bother when you can get one from the trading post any day for not even a thousand more undamaged?

Anyways, i give up going to auctions now. Will bid online occasionally but thats about it.

*end of rant....

It's because the people buying them will part them out for many times what they paid for the whole car at the auction.

Yeah i realise people pull this stuff apart and i guess eBay is to blame for a bit of this inflated auction pricing. But how much profit could you make from a $1200 EB GLi wagon hit front and rear with unknown driveline condition/damage? Seems hardly worth the trouble??

I just dont understand people paying same prices for a damaged car as you would for a complete known running car?

I think wreckers going to auctions will pay that type of money because they'll sell nearly every peice of it and know for sure they'll make money on top.

I've been looking at auction sites and keen to put some bids up but last few times i've actually went i've noticed they dont go too cheap

Well you know what you need to do then, buy a decent condition fairlane and ride it off into a pole then auction it at one of these auctions and get double what you paid

sounds like they've gone up in price.
the donor car for my wagon cost me $2k.

NL Fairlane Concorde, minimal damage to 1 door, clear coat peeling accross top of car.
V8, 190,000km's, coulda resprayed it and put it back on the road.

few years ago i got an NF Fairlane V8 that was $1500, front damage but motor etc was ok.

maybe its just a bad time of year.

You can buy my Fairlane. I'll even drive over it with the Patrol if you want.

Yeh it looks as tho prices have soared at the auctions... Oh well, this stuff goes in cycles.

Im just being a tight ass really. My idea of buying a car and parting to get maybe 50% of the cash back doesnt look like it will happen. Something will pop up tho, always does.

I just hope a nice DL doesnt pop up before a good parts car for mine does. I might be tempted to offload mine!

Yeah I saw that, its too bad that its in QLD, otherwise it would of been a good donor car for a project of mine.
