Long weekend at bairnsdale

Postby EDFalcon » March 25th, 2008, 5:44 pm

Well i spent the long weekend down near bairnsdale. 1400 acres of good paddocks for some car fun, drinking, fires and shooting. Just the kind of relaxing weekend to let off some steam. Now getting onto the property was interesting because i had a full car and towing a trailer i got stuck in some really soft sand (Pic 1 & 2) though we managed to drag the car out with a $500 volvo we took down as a paddock basher (video 1). Anyway now to the interesting (car related) part of the weekend:

We had an XE wagon which wasnt going forwards and we were pushing everything in reverse. So after sinking a few frothies and getting our convertble patrol running we got to talking about getting the XE running. Someone said they saw on TV that if you give the diff a 180 degree turn along the driveline, if you put the car in reverse, it will drive the forwards. We'd had few to drink so thought why not give it a go!! We rolled the XE onto its side so we could release everything and give it a turn. While it was up we thought we'd bolt the rear axle under the leaf springs instead of on top of them just so we had a bit of height. Believe it or not spinning the diff actually works!!!! Now the car goes forwards (when you put it in reverse) and has some wicked bounce. We also grinded the roof out above the boot so there was somewhere to stand while hunting. Anyway here are the pics.

Well there it is. If you ever lose your forward clutches in your auto falcon roll it onto it's side and give the diff a 180!!!

Bounce is unreal!! With a full car and 1 adult and 5 kids in the boot it still gets some wicked bounce. I have to say its one of the best paddock bashers i've ever driven. Next time we go down we want to take a welder, grind out the centre of the XE wheels and patrol wheels and weld the centres of the XE wheels to the patrol wheels. Then we'll have a lifted XE with 4x4 wheels on it.

PS i forgot to say it still hits like 70km in reverse :D

Just got a few more pics from a mate. You can see the hole in the roof in this one. I'm sitting it it (not the kid standing up).

This is the only other volvo vid i can find. Shame really, I taught a few people to do donuts that weekend and didnt film any of it.

You needed to teach your friends how to do doughies?

That XE looks fun.

Your wallets would be hating life. 70km/h in one short ratio gear would kill fuel economy. The econogauge in the old XE would been brokeded by the end of the weekend.

We normally just cruised around on idle but headed out onto one of the salt lake's to give it a go for a speed run. Wasnt too bad on petrol. Used about 40L for a weekend of driving. Cant complain with that.

jet-6: We were actually on a property that borders Hollands Landing but we tell people Bairnsdale because more people know where it is!

What one would that be? The one where the the drag strip is/has been forever, or is there more?
