Melbourne Nightlife

Melbourne's nightlife is in for a shock. If you didn't know it already (which would be hard to believe!), the Victorian Premier has declared a temporary 2am lockout trial from Tuesday 3rd June for 3 months. This trial will affect most licensed venues in the Melbourne, Stonnington, Port Phillip and Yarra districts. To really spell it out, from 3rd June if you're not inside a venue or club by 2am, you're out on the streets! The government claims that is being introduced to combat an increase in alcohol driven violence on the streets, however according to MelbourneLockedOut.com – a pressure group formed by the public in protest against the harmful 2am lockout policy – it will result in more angry people left on the streets after 2am, resulting in an even bigger increase in violence.

It's thought that instead of decreasing street violence, the lockout will cause many detrimental consequences, including having a huge impact on Melbourne's reputation as a 24-hour city, therefore subsequently affecting tourism. In turn, this is expected to reduce the amount of touring international artists who visit Melbourne (and Australia), and already several events during the trial have been canceled.

Taxis and public transport are expected to be affected, as well as drink driving due to lack of transport options. Late night businesses will be affected, even resulting in potential job loses for staff. The list goes on! Surprisingly, Crown Casino is exempt as well as 24hr bottle shops. An official protest is being held on Friday 30th May at 5pm, Treasury Gardens, corner Flinders and Spring Streets (5 mins walk to Parliament House). Wear white and make your voice heard against the proposed 2am curfew for Melbourne.

Organisers have expressed that this protest is to be extremely peaceful and non-violent, so any stupidity will not be tolerated. They have requested that you DO NOT BRING: alcohol, drugs, idiotic behaviour, violence or weapons of any sort. This will result in you being removed from the protest by the Victorian Police, and the organisers will fully support them in doing this.

If you are keen to support this protest, then head on down on Friday and do so peacefully! For more information go to MelbourneLockedOut.com

There will be idiots there. Myself included.
I believe the lockout will be short-lived though as per the increase in violence as a by-product of what's infact trying to reduce it.
But hey, live and learn seems to be the Government's moto as well, not just mine

EDIT - OMG BANANA

Yep, happened in Ballarat when it was brought in a few years back.

Yeah, that did happen in Ballarat. However, now its fine. Everyone's used to it. Fucking shit though dealing with bouncers when you are working at the venue and need to get in after 3am.

Geelong is a lot different. The lack of curfew isn't really a problem, in fact for punters its good. But kinda shit when you have people walking down the stairs to Lamby's when you're trying to carry shit out.

You wont let your gf out after 12?? You sound like a teenage gals dad. Lol

But nah I understand where you are coming from. I dont drink everytime i go out anyway, I can still have fun without it. But If I am going to have a night out and go into the city then i am going to make the most of it. I mean is there any point in going out 10pm (average time ppl go into city) and then coming home 2 hours later?? It just starts getting good at 12!

Everyone is different, i enjoy heading out into the city now and then and you enjoy driving. Its not like i do it every weekend and HAVE to stay out until that time but now and then I enjoy a good night out with mates.
