you can't answer that either way.
are you playing devils advocate or do you really believe that current driver education is adequate??

I cant see driver education stopping stupidity, we can educate on how to driver in everday situations, how to avoid accidents etc, but this? He was doing stuff that is mentioned as illegal in driving manuals.

I do agree that driver education needs to be ammended, currently we are taught in a perfect world when accidents don't happen. We arn't taught how to safely break, or swerve etc...

its still way too easy to get ya p's these days, even with having to do 120 hours on ur p's, i know a guy who sat at school an forged 110 hours on his Ls an has so far had about 5-6 accidents.just cos u can display to a dude u can do a 3point turn or reverse park isnt shit.
drivers ed or somethin along those lines should be manditory,it wont stop all deaths but could prevent some if people knew how to react to their car losing control..restricting what cars P platers can drive wouldnt do much either i dont think,no matter what sort of car u drive its deadly in its own way..

people may have a dig at me but theres no such thing as an accident, especially in this case. This happened because of a bunch of stupid decisions on behalf of all involved.

condolences to the families of the passengers and even the driver. they all made a decision and it ended up in the worst possible way.

you can only lower the road toll so much. i think you'd have to introduce some very harsh penalties for hooning. if someone wants to do 160km/h, there not gonna wait til the next track day or drags to drive fast. even increasing the driving age. its proven that teens still havnt developed the part in their brain that asess's risk taking. i was a bit silly a few years back but if i was threatened with jail time or something, i wouldnt have re considered doing what i used to.

A few people may jump up and down, but why not limit the top speed of all P plater cars to 110Kph unless they are on a track day or drag strip?

A simple speed limiter is technically possible till they get a little more mature and know the limits of the car and themselves better.

I was reading in the paper today that the driver may have been drunk and the car was out of Rego, im under the impression the driver may have been a ticking time bomb.

I herd on the radio that one of his mates, got done doing 160km/h in a 70km/h zone within 10km of the accident site. Lesson not learned I guess.

Todays youths are taking some hectic risks all for what? Fun? To make a impression?

I cant remember such horrific crash's of young drivers say 10 years ago, Im thinking its the difference in generations maturity, and respect of everything eg, life, property, others.

I really feel for the survivor, a very young female who's life has been traumatised by this event. I hope she recovers quicky and is able to accept, and put this behind her to move on. (big ask for a young soul)

The other point that this raises, for me at least is stupidity in general. I feel sorry for everyone involved based on them being young, and nobody deserves that regardless of how useless the brain function may be, BUT, i would like to think that a normal person would not willingly hop into a car with a drunk driver. Maybe the didn't know, but its likely they did and didn't care or succumbed to peer pressure or looking like a wuss.

I vote for driver education and mandatory skidpan/driving course as part of the test.

If you can do a 3-point turn or reverse point to point, youve got a licence, lol!

Yeah that would help the majority of uneducated " im in my own world" drivers. I highly doubt a defensive driving course would have helped this guy.
We all have driven a bit "wreckless" but it comes down to how dumb you really are versus how you implement risk assessment.

I think giving kids access to skid pans would give them confidence which in turn would indirectly encourage them to do it on the street.

There isnt much hope for this situation, HIGH speed, lack of expirence, being absolutely blind, and being in hero mode (peer encouragement). It could have been a different outcome if you took only one of those elements away.

Its odd your saying in VIC its pi$$ easy to get a licence yet you have the toughest laws in regards to road use?

It all boils down to one things. some people make stupid decisions. all the training and law changes in the world aren't going to stop people from having car accidents. some people just dont give a shit and will do whatever the hell they want, even if they have had their license taken off of them etc etc etc. im not trying to be a fatalist here but as long as there are cars, there will be car accidents.

by the way, i havent been on in a while and it seems some things havent changed. frost is still here and is still a dick.

135km/h speed limiters in all cars driven by P platers (I say 135 because you dont wanna get stuck on the wrong side of the road too long overtaking trucks)

And mandatory interlock devices. All drink driving offenders under 26 get them automatically work car etc.

That would solve half the problem wouldn't it?

Thrill is a killer these days. Company in the car ("hanging out the window"), doesn't exactly help the situation. People need to know when to say stop. I'm 18, and i have been stupid and got to these speed's and higher, i since have had a major crash in which 4 of my mates could of been killed (we luckily flew between 2 1m diameter tree's, which could barely fit a car inbetween, and i remember nothing of it), all because i was trying to show off and drift in the rain. Since then, you would barely find me a couple of km's over the speed limit.

You see allot of movies, about intense situations (all of the fast and the furious series) while driving at high speeds. All of these suped up cars making it look good on film, people don't realise how much skill and practice it takes, and the risk of it.

Speed limits are put in place for a reason, people can't help but go over them sometimes. But it does get ridiculous when people are doing double the speed limit.

why not just speed limit EVERY CAR, and put a BRETHO in every car?

you people are missing the point, ITS NOT THE CAR ITS THE DRIVER!

A hyundai exel can be just as deadly as a SS comodore.

We can all piss and moan that we are all top shit drivers, but really know one is, unless you know what others are doing on the road.

This kunt fucked up, now all p platers are coping it. i got pulled over this arvo and my car gone over with a fine tooth comb, the officer also said somthing about this and how we all need to slow down. I WAS IN FUCKING TRAFFIC MOVING 1 CAR SPACE EVERY MINUTE.

My mate got his old festiva up to 160km/h... 4 cylinder 1.3 liter... this is as fast as that XR-6 was going, smaller car so even less chance of surviving if you crashed at that speed... more likely to crash as well.
Vehicle restrictions wont help at all, and advanced driving skills test's or training wouldn't of helped in this crash either.

I was told the dude was blind drunk.
His passengers were probably also drunk, probably all just as drunk or close enough... so they would of thought "this guy isn't as drunk as us, if he takes it easy we'll be fine."... otherwise they wouldn't of jumped in to the car.
Probably all leaving a party with no way to get home, or maybe he only just bought the car and they all thought it would be a good idea to take it for a spin...? doesn't matter what they were doing anyway, they wouldn't wanted to be left behind and thought they'd be alright going in the car... and because they were drunk they didn't decide not to. I know of a few times when my mates have gotten into cars with drunk drivers while they were drunk them selves... it just happens, people just need to take these people's keys before they hop into the car.

I don't think anything can be done to prevent this happening in the future except have breath testers before engine starts or something in every car... which probably wont happen?

I feel sorry for everyone who was in the car including the driver, its a stupid mistake and I'm sure he wouldn't of done it on purpose... now he pays for his mistake with his life.. no one deserves it really.

A mate I went to school with spent 2 years behind bars for drink driving. He drove a bunch of mates home from Mornington 1 night, dropped them all off and then proceeded to drive home to Langwarrin. Saw an orange light miles away but due to being drunk didn't judge the distance too well and he decided to rush the light. It went red way before he even got to it and a driver pulled into the intersection and the T-boned the car doing around the 120km/h.

Driver was killed instantly. He was freaked out by what happened and legged it come coz it was just around the corner from where he lived. Went inside and told his parents what had just happened and they drove him back only to see a body being removed from the vehicle.

Point is, even when you're not in the wrong bad shit can happen because other idiots decide to do the wrong thing.

P.S...I think 2 years for killing someone drink driving is pathetic, mate or not.

P.S...I think 2 years for killing someone drink driving is pathetic, mate or not.

agreed. if you accidentally kill someone being stupid or otherwise any other way youd be done for manslaughter and get ten at least usually

you people are missing the point, ITS NOT THE CAR ITS THE DRIVER!

I WAS IN FUCKING TRAFFIC MOVING 1 CAR SPACE EVERY MINUTE.

thats fucked. i got drug raided the other day in mine just for driving near (meaning about 3 streets away) a place where someone had been reportedly selling drugs. they started searchin car at about 11 at night and i left that spot at 1am. prick cops
there is no way to stop people being tools on the road. if you put a breatho or speed limiter on cars there is always gunna be a way to bypass it. if it can be done it can be undone
