Sounds like the inhibitor switch? Are you familiar with these? They're a small-ish white plastic component hanging off the passenger side of the box, they have two plugs sticking out 120 degrees apart. It acts as the inhibitor to stop the car starting in R or D (3, 2, 1), and also dictates gearchanges. When it's on its way out it does random things like 4th to 2nd at 100kph
It's a 10 minute job to replace, the part costs $120ish. Just be careful when putting the replacement inhibitor switch on, it you push the metal dowel in which it surrounds, you're stuffed(so don't force it on, it should slip on with some firm guidance).
