You could go down the ecomonical route of the 4.2 Diesel that Patrols/Mavericks came out with at that time. Bolts straight in with a donor and would be good for around 100kw (?) at the flywheel with plenty of torque compared to the smaller enigne. Will never give you problems if its been taken care of- ours has been going strong for 20 years.

Nah, that isnt viable either.

Have you seen the price of those suckas? :( Plus I just spent $2k putting gas research in. :P

Its gonna be a 5.0 transplant or a 2nd handy 4.2 petrol with a turbo.

My next patrol will be a turbo diesel for sure, I kinda wish I got one to begin with. My engine sucks arse at water crossings.

Just remember not to get a 3.0 Turbo diesel. I've heard nothing but bad things from them.

Just use a 5 litre bottom end and heads with an edelbrock/torquer/Harrop duel or single plane manifold with a Holley.
Use a VH/VK HEI distributor with a strong coil. Ive seen 230rwkw from a combo like this with a decent cam/spring setup.
The factory bananas are just shit for making decent hp.
Its cheap to do. I dont really like the holden 5 litre though. They came factory fitted with oil leaks!

ME personaly I would go RB30ET or 4.2 turbo with a patrol. Easy cheap hp and much more torque than any 5 litre!
Call Mark Johnson at JPC and talk to him about Patrols! He has a twin turbo one!

Holden 5.0 would be ok I reckon, from memory the alternator is fairly high up the motor on the passenger side so it would stay out of the water better, and I reckon the dizzy being at the back of the engine almost under the manifold should maybe keep it a bit drier too. They're a shit to do leads on though :/

Probably a good idea to reseal the thing before you put it in (new sump, rocker cover and intake manifold gaskets) and new oil and water pumps wouldn't go astray.

Man dont do that to a good nissan. Turbo a TB42 and as above talk to mark at jpc he built a mates one and it yields 310kw at the treads, harden up.

Seen it done many times Dan, nothing like a 5lt SWB patrol with a caravan pulling past you at 160km/h+ with Grunt note to it

Castlemaine Rod Shop and Castle Auto Electrics in Castlemaine have all the bits you need to complete it.

But I know a guy whos repowered a few if you want to have a chat to him his names Brendan Murphy from Just outside Ballarat (ill pm u his number)- He runs a panel shop and still does the odd conversion (he owned that LWB twin cab GU Ute I was driving) tell him Anthony told you to call.

And a mate still has one of the patrols with the 5lt in it, running straight gas and Brendan can prolly help you getting a decent motor cheap.

hey dan, if your chasing one my mate has a nice VN for sale that he only wants $1500 for. No reg no rwc but it drives if you jump start it. Its got quite a few parts you can sell too like sunroof, 4.11s(I think), exhaust, etc. The car is actually pretty straight, no damage and he ran a 15 flat in it at calder but drove it maybe 6 times before losing his licence and then when he got his licence back the car had a few electrical gremlins which he obviously hasn't fixed. The bloke brought an XR6T now and is sick of seeing the 5.0L sitting around. $1500 and its yours.

Thanks for all of the replies.

1. A ford engine isnt going to happen unless someone magically creates a decent conversion kit.

2. Nothing is going to be done until my current engine dies and needs replacing. Its knocking so who knows how long it will last.

3. A boosted TB42 was what I was originally considering and still might do. The reason I changed my mind was because my big ends sound fcked so im up for a new engine soon. I figure I can get a decent V8 in there for cheaper than another TB42 + a turbo setup. V8's dont have adjustable wastegates which means I wont spend 11ty upgrading it every 5 seconds chasing more power. All the turbo TB42's I know of have overheating problems which kind of puts me off.

Before I made this thread I rang up a few places trying to find a manifold. MTQ have nearly doubled their prices since last time I checked and the other off the shelf manifolds dont suit what I want. Ive got a guy trying to get a better price from MTQ for me atm.

Oh and last Friday I managed to snap my LPG tank mounts off the chassis so that needs fixing before anything else.
