wish i knew more bout cars

was driving home last night around 2am and turned on the heating.... and froze!! (i got an el fairmont ghia). the second i turn the climate controll onto internal air the a/c goes on and any air that comes out of the upper vents is freezing, the feet vents are slightly warmer than the temp in the car but it dosnt really make up for freezing.
my understanding of heating is that the air is heated by the engine so there shouldnt be any dramas getting hot air.
what i dont know how to do is look under the hood and see what air hose isnt connected, or know if its the computer in the climate control that just wants me to freeze.
