HELP. MANUAL EB WONT GO INTO 1ST GEAR.

Postby Coon_of_doom » October 24th, 2009, 12:22 pm

the other night on the way home from work, i pulled into the driveway, down shifted from 2nd into 1st and my gearbox made a grinding noise and the shifter would not move.

i managed to find a gear and use the clutch to get it home.

i got the shifter free and it went into 3rd, 4th, 5th and reverse freely but not 1st and 2nd, it felt as if something was in the way. with some fiddling i got it into second and now goes into 2nd freelyish, i can move the car but still no 1st. when the car is on and its idling in nutral theres a faint wering/ winding noise which goes away when i stand on the clutch.

every so often when down shifting into 1st it would slightly grind and a few gears would be dificult to change into.

has ANYONE got any info to help me or know what maybe wrong?

It would be worth checking out the condition of your firewall too as they can have a tendency to crack where the clutch cable runs through.

i checked the cable tension and the firewall but they both are fine, there may be a slight flex in the firewall but i can still drive the car using all the other gears, i just can't get it into 1st gear and it makes a slight winding noise when idling in neutral.

does anyone think it is an internal problem?

has anyone had the same thing happen to them?

i know this is a different car but my mates wrx had a similar problem. it got stuck in 3rd gear not sure how but it starts n it makes a weird grinding noise until u put ur foot on the clutch then the noise goes away. it was stuck in third because the clutch fork actually got stuck from pushing it to hard so if i was u i would check the clutch fork with 2 people 1 pushing the clutch n the other inspecting it. good luck

I had this happen in my ED, but not during a change. It popped out of second when sideways and fairly hammering (BIIIG overrev!). After losing it and coming to a stop, I couldn't get it into either first or second. I just went 3rd-2nd (attempting to anyways) about 30 odd times, until it would very reluctantly go in. I kept doing it for ages, and eventually 2nd became alot better, and then I could JUST get it into first after about 30 attempts. I kept forcing it and forcing it, swapping between 4th/1st and 3rd/2nd and eventually I was able to drive it around sort of ok. After a few days it was totally fine. Still have no idea why it popped out of gear, but the box never did it again.

thanks for your help. it's fine in every gear but 1st now, can drive it and its fine but can't get it into 1st. i might take the box out this w.e and inspect, hopefully it's something minor and easily fixed. Does any one in New Zealand have a good spare T5 lying around they're willing to sell me cheap? thanks, any more help is well appreciated.

If you tried changing into 1st above 30/40 kmh, you've probably screwed something inside the box
