Boosted Falcon

If anyone was thinking of rebuilding an auto for their Falcon, have a look at this picture then maybe you'll have second thoughts



Worst. Idea. Ever. I had this auto from an EL lying around (it was busted) and I thought I'd pull it apart to see what's involved in putting a rebuild kit through it. Anyway, I was amazed at the number of parts they can cram into a relatively small space. It probably is do-able but you would really have to pay attention to how things come apart so you can put them back in the correct order. It's way more complicated than cracking open an engine.

The whole reason I did this was because the auto in my EF is playing up a bit and it doesn't seem to have a 3rd gear or any gear braking in 2nd, plus it thumps into gears a bit. But now I think I'll just chuck in a good second handy. There really isn't a point to this post but just thought some people might be interested lol.

WOW, that's soo gay. So did you find out what was busted in it ?

I spent a week at trade school pulling autos apart and putting them back together, plus textbook stuff.

I have no fucking clue how they work.

its actually not that hard, it honestly looks more complex than it is, done it a few times at work and at trade school, plus at trade school having to explain how it all works, after a while it all comes together

trust me no matter how easy you think it is.. its 5 times harder. unless you do BTRs on a regular basis its always a slow and painful process. there is a one way bearing in there that looks like you could put it in either way.. but if you put it in wrong the box will select two gears at once when driven and lock the whole box up. you need all the planetary gears all in right gotta keep c1 an c2 an all the relevant springs together.. the clutch packs. the valvebody with all the little fuckin nooks and crannies.. vaseline is your friend when it comes to rebuilding autos.

I still could but now i can't be bothered lol. And I can't justify spending 400 bux on a rebuild kit.

I'd just like to thank Sunny, Gilly and Damo for giving us a hand today installing a new auto in my EF. We got a fair bit done today, Sunny and I started removing the engine and gearbox out of his wrecked ED about 11:30am this morning and had everything out in about 3 hrs. Grinding off the radiator support certainly helps it all come out easier! Apparently the gearbox out of the ED needed a new S5 solenoid so I swapped it with a good one from an EA. I also put a new oil filter in.

Damo and Gill came over later and we pulled out my gearbox. I also had one of those JMM 3000 stall converters that's been sitting round for ages so we chucked that in as well. It was a bit risky putting in the box out of the ED because no one knew what condition it was in.....the previous owner had only said it needed an S5...but people always talk shit when they sell cars so who knew. Anyway once it was in and topped up with 10 litres of brand spankin trans fluid the thing was perfect! I'm so happy all that work wasn't for nothing. Sunny also managed to fix the exhaust leak I had thanks to some handy air tools.

The stallie is a bit weird, it is a lot easier to spin the wheels off the line just by flooring it but when your driving normally it kind of feels like its slipping all the time......the best way of describing it is like driving a manual with the clutch pressed in a little bit while your accelerating. I think in a stock car it's kind of pointless but ah well, it might motivate me to actually get back into modding cars again and actually do something performance wise to it.

This insides of the the 4 speed auto are now in the inside of a bin, just like I thought.

J/K The new 4 speed is pretty good, hi-stall is definitely a bit weird I guess people get used to them. Maybe commando can further comment, though I think he removed his. T5 FTMFW!

Yea I took a BW35 apart once, then quickly dismissed the idea of ever building my own auto. Fcuk that for a horrible joke.

Sad part is I knew this total nuff-nuff from school who used to spend his lunchtimes catching seagulls with fishing lines, and that dumbkent now works at an auto trans joint. WTF! Kent is barely sentient.

On another note, Powerglides look pretty easy. 2 gears FTW!

nah you need vaseline to hold everything in place inside the planetary and drums and shit. while your putting it back together.. if all the little clips and balls and springs fall out your in trouble. petroleum jelly just melts once some hot auto fluid gets to it so it does no harm. ive seen a fair few rebuilds and work with a guy who is a guru when it come to autos.
