NEC Australia making advanced Police cars

Postby Malakai » December 30th, 2009, 6:32 pm

NEC Australia are making what they're calling the world's most advanced law enforcement vehicle. With both domestic and international applications, customers are likely to include the Los Angeles Police Department. The solution is based on NEC’s Mobile Access Controller (MAC), an integrated voice and data communications platform which was developed at the company’s Australian Design and Development Centre.

Interesting setup, also interesting they had to relocate the Commodore Control Centre.

Hey if it makes their job easier and doesnt give them a cluttered dash, can only be a good thing.

I think that is a laptop docking station in the middle on the slide out tray.

You obviously didn't look very closely at the second photograph.

That screen would almost be appropriate for a WM Caprice, though a little over the top perhaps. The below image is from 2 years ago, still some interesting ideas like the GPS device firer.

I've not heard any updates on the plans to confirm production the Statesman-based cop car for the States. There were rumours even back in the WH days of Holden-based cop cars to replace the Crown Victoria. Today we have known prototypes, though at the same time it is an environment in which the US government would be increasingly reluctant to outsource for political reasons, even if the Australian product were far superior.

Windows based: Fail
Epic heavy: Fail
Epic proportions: Fail
Touch screen: Fail

How long before the cops get sick of turning the car on and off to reboot windows when it crashed? How long will all that crap last with cops jumping off curbs, over speed bumps and driving through parks at high speed? Where are they going to put their bullet proof vests, first aid kit and all the other crap that usually lives in the space under the parcel shelf? How easy do you think it will be to use the touch screen at 100+km/h in a 60 zone chasing baddie or on their way to an emergency? Esp while the driver is trying to use the gear lever and you have nothing to rest your wrist on while you flail about in the passenger seat?

Sorry, it looks cool, but to me it is 100% fail.

Look at your car. Now back to mine. Now back to yours. Now back to mine. Sadly, yours isn't mine. But if you stopped buying dodgy cars and bought an ED, yours could be like mine. Look down. Back up. Where are you? ...You're on BoostedFalcon, reading the signature your signature could be like! Anything is possible when your car looks like my car... I'm on a computer.

Hardware seems like epic overkill. I agree they need more boot space though.

Rollin I dunno what the cops are like in Brisbane but down here they generally stick to the road, so having a touch screen wouldnt be any harder than a physical keyboard sticking out and taking up space the other 99% off the time when not in use.

Also its an auto so hopefully the driver wouldnt be using the gear lever too often.

With all the stuff police need in a car there is always going to be trade offs. The territorys they drive are good for that but obviously not suitable for majority use.

I can remember seeing a manual cop car in i dont know how long...the 3rd pic shows a keyboard...

Rollin is right about where are they gonna put the stuff thats normally in the boot cos there aint much room left.

I would assume the interface will integrate the usual controls for a/c and such that are removed from the dash.

I believe they would be more likely to use the setup shown in troutmans pic.

:banghead:

Part a - see cop cars are on road 99.9% of time

Part b - have touch screen in your own car, much smaller 7" touch screen no less

not that hard mate

Actually there is one update, if you want to see the real thing (I have no idea how much of this is NEC hardware), here is a video of an exported Holden Caprice which is now serving law enforcement duties in LA.

You over estimate what police do. There is probably only a handful of people on this whole forum who have ever seen a full-on police chase. Not very often police 'chase' people like in the movies you tool.

Police chases are far more common in the US and often venture off road, which is why relatively high ground clearance and high-ish profile tyres are standard fare on patrol vehicles over there.

Now, how about a test drive (Atlanta, Georgia)?
