Depends on the apprenticeship, but not before 24, because the government classes you as a youth under 24 if you are an apprentice or at schooling (uni/tafe) and centrelink tops you up.

As for the wages, most start at around $250 per week for first year and it goes up every year about $50, but depends on the profession, but think about 3/4 years of being a tightass gets you a qualification for life.

VICTORIA, light vehicle mechanic: 21 but u have to start the apprenticeship at 21 to count. im halfway through mine, about to turn 21 and i dont get graduated to a mature.

minimum wage for u/21, 1st yr is around $7.60/hr. im 2nd yr on $9.20/hr.

centrelink - if your parents come under the threshold u may qualify for some payments incl rent assistance for out of homers such as myself

This point is EXACTLY why i left Nissan when i was an apprentice mechanic. I was working 8 am till 5.30 pm for $300 a week.

The worst part was the fully qualified guys there were on $17.80 or something an hour

Fvck that shit. I am earning that much with no qualification and i get to work in an air conditioned office and have way better perks and more respect. Also Ive got heaps of potential to move up in this job.

Plus half the mechanics there are dumb shits anyway. I asked one of the guys what caused the 'burble' on a certain car that was in (had an after market exhaust) and he said its probably something thats broken

Diesel Mechanic Apprenticeship Normal 1st year is approx 220$ or so and 4th year 460$ish ( after tax )

Adult starts first year at around 400$ and forth year is 450$ (after tax)

An adult apprenticeship is around about 90% of 4th year wages at the start and only up the slightest.

i spend $20-30/week on food shopping(no-name brand and only essentials), $130/week rent (share house incl. bills), bout $60 on fuel in the 2 rigs (e10 in the sedan), pre paid mobile cost 30 a month. then theres alcohol, out for dinner with mates etc.

centrelink pays 150ish a fortnight, 80 rent assist and the rest youth allowance as im an independant. dunno if it will continue after my 21st tho :|

auto elec would probably see more $$$ ring up an apprentice agency and ask the minimum wage etc, can't hurt

As far as i knew adult wages were changed to 30+ thanks mr howard

As a 2nd year Sparky i get $10 per hour....which is like $397 take home from memory.

Its shit and it makes it hard to live....but theres nothing you can do about it.....well in my industry you can choose industrial which will double or tripple your age, but good old domestic like me get the worst jobs and the worst money :)

payback is when you finish your time :)

as said i would contact centrelink and see what money you can get....that and get a good accountant for when tax time comes....claim back tools etc

every 6mths you do get wage top ups...but they go directly to things like rego :)

dam I wish I got $250 a week in my first year (boiler maker) I was pullin a massive $169pw and that had to pay for the 65k round trip to work everyday, lucklily I was still living at home and didn't have to many other expences. I was rolling in it in my 4th year on $312pw, even got a car loan on that (for me ED)..

still would have thought that would just be a normal plumber, or perhaps a normal plumber with 6 months special training not a whole apprenticeship. oh well i guess its a good thing, if i was in a burning building id want the damn sprinklers working properly :P

would get pretty boring id imagine

in the last 2 months(after recieving a $20 payrise...wow) I have been getting a poor $294 p/week as 1st yr apprentice light mechanic then -$50 board to my parents, so really I end up with $244 p/week in my pocket... the 10 months before that, I was earning $277 p/week - $50 = $227 p/week..........but today was my 1 yr anniversary from startin my apprenticeship, so it will be interesting to see what i will now be getting paid as a 2nd yr. stuff all no doubt

I'm a 2nd year panel beater next week, my first year I'm getting $288 a week, it's shit but I'm still at home paying board and in a bungalow out the back so I'm able to save a bit towards a house. But it still struggles, there's defiantly no way I could afford renting, or if I was I wouldn't be saving a cent towards a house. Things only get done to the car in bursts these days once I've saved enough coin to do so. Every 6 months I get a $250 apprenticeship bonus and a $500 wage top-up, which is actually due soon! :drinks2:
But as mentioned at least at the end of it I have a qualification under me and if I decide to go else where and make more money and things don't turn out, I can always come back to the trade.

I could of said his offical Job Title - Pipe Layer.

But basically its a form of Plumbing/Building Construction

He works on new sites, because we supply his boss computers etc for office/onsite quotes, all there work is brand new buildings mainly or upgrades when roofs have been pulled out.

You should become a Communications Trainee - Roofs all day, digging trenchs etc, when I was first year I was on 800 a week and had a car, but it was hard work.

some fpv gt's are as cheap as ba xr8's lol....if, for the first 2 yr's of an apprenticeship, you resist the urge to buy anything that you dont 'need', I reckon you can easily have $20,000 in the bank after 2 yr's

Still a difference between the business having the collateral and him having physical money.

Doubtful!!
If you earn 250 a week for both years, you've only spent $6k on living for both years!!
If you can live off <$55 a week, then by all means go ahead.

a mate at trade school living at home was putting away easily 2/3rds of his pay
and just bought a brand new sv6 ute (with a little bit of loan added to what he already had)

is a fair effort to do it tho.
