22 impoundments as police rain on hoons parade

Tuesday, 09 March 2010 12:40

Twenty-two cars were impounded and 80 notices of un-roadworthiness were handed out in a massive police blitz targeting illegal drag racing in Campbellfield last night.

Police from the Fawkner, Epping, Melton, Maribyrnong, and Brimbank Traffic Management Units were supported by members of the recently-launched ORU as they checked 200 vehicles attempting to take part in the hoon activity.

In addition to the 22 cars impounded last night, a further five vehicles are being followed up for impoundments by police today.

The Environmental Protection Authority and the Sherriff’s office were also on site supporting police.

The EPA handed out 33 notices for offences relating to noise pollution, and the Sherriff’s Office recovered about $115,000 in outstanding fines.

Fawkner Traffic Management Unit’s Senior Sergeant Yvonne Upton was pleased with the results from last night’s operation, and warned motorists who were considering taking part in illegal drag racing to think again.

“This operation was intelligence based and we were very much aware of the activities planned,” Sen Sgt Upton said.

Police covertly monitored the site near factory sites in Campbellfield leading up to the event and at about 10pm cordoned off the area with road blocks, and escorted every vehicle on site through a check point.

“Let this be a warning; we take hooning seriously and we are on to you.”

In addition to vehicles being checked closely by police, the estimated 300 pedestrians on site ready to watch the event were walked through a check point and issued with by-laws penalty notices of about $200 by the Hume Council.

“Hooning has been a problem in this area and last night’s effort proves we are committed to getting these dangerous drivers off our roads,” Sen Sgt Upton said.

Police also detected the following offences in last night’s blitz:

- Five disqualified drivers detected
- Five unregistered vehicles
- 29 penalty notices were distributed for unsafe vehicles
- 10 P-plate offences (related to exceeding peer passenger restrictions)

“Until everyone understands the dangers involved in this type of behaviour, we’ll keep coming up with new ways to catch those doing the wrong thing.”

I wasn't there but 200 vehicles attempting to take part? I'm sure most of those were actually just spectating with no intention to take part. Gotta laugh at how the media tries to make it sound worse than what it actually is!

A covert op was carried out on all the police's wifes lastnight whilst they were @ campbellfield.
A net profit of $39 was made
17 women were reported for bad behaviour
Over 90% of them were found to be unroadworthy, and frankly downright fugly
28 Penalty notices were wiped on thier curtains
and 1 P-Plate wife was had. She was awesome.

anyone who didn't see that coming is mentally retarded.
the $115k of unpaid fines is fairly damning.

i was there last wednesday, if anything its a good thing they keep it off the streets, everybody there knows the risks involved and no innocent people can get hurt, so its clearly a cash grab.

not tryin to offend people but thats a real shit attitude... wat if u got injured or killed? u may of known that was coming but wat about ur family and people that know u? do they accept the dangers? pretty sure they will end up being innocent victims who will end up blaming some one. will end up being the cops who take it all for not doing anything about it...
i dont think its about money, they have to do something about the problem (and yes, it is a problem) if they make an example of them all then its good. go to calder or something if u want to drag...

It might be a sign for the State Government to look at another drag strip.

I've heard about these meets going on for a long time, but never been or never had any intention of going.

A friend of mine was there last week, and not only got her car rear ended by a dickhead showing off, witnessed a few other minor smashes as everyone scattered.

This police raid has been a long time coming, and I'm glad to see it happen. There are far too many hero's around here with the "I think I'm an awesome driver" attitude.

On the flip side, the police do themselves no favors with a draconian attitude to any modified car. Regardless of if it is being driven sedately or not.
Doing things like hanging around drag tag, and harassing people as they leave do not help their credibility.

I was only thinking about this the other day... I wouldn't doubt more of these 'recovery' missions happening in the future.
This happened at the Ballarat swap meet the other weekend, a number plate recogition machine mounted on a car was used to detect any number plates with warrants for overdue speeding, parking or tollway fines, Then matched with a Justice Department database. What better place to get people who are dodging the law than at a large gathering of people??

"The operation, launched at the Super Southern Swap Meet at the weekend, netted the State Government $190,000 from 728 warrants. The cars were fitted with wheel clamps, and drivers had to pay up at a mobile sheriff's van at the edge of the swap meet."

if you are still going to these drags at the same location then im sorry but you have had to have seen it coming.

nah, i like outside. if i get skittled thenshit happens, just better not be by a hoon provin to his mates he can drive. just dont see the point in this. accidents do happen. wouldnt we all hate it if one of our mates got fucked up at one of these drags?
i really do think they need to open up more places like calder but...
also cops hanging around to pick up on tiniest defects is gay, but its the way it is. they have the power to do wat they want. its not right but. also, i dont kno how they can fine spectators.

these guys do it at the same 3 locations twice a week on the same days. they were pretty much asking for it to come and to add to it, its taken the cops a really long time to raid them this big. ud usually get the 3 or 4 cops cars come to break it up. after 6 or 7 months of the same shit happening at the same locations cops should of known better and done something sooner.

They were talking on the late news on channel 10 that the ages were from 15 up to 58 at the event .
they then spoke to someone that had left kids at home (im guessing with parents) and that come out to this event all the time .

Street racing back 10-15yrs ago was heaps better and less idiots around trying to prove anything.

At all they Sydney street runs ive been to i have never seen any accident and there where some serious cars coming on tilt trays with slicks and the works.

I havent been to them since as all u see is ppl with IQ's of a pig with attitudes and something to prove and that mixed together u get trouble/accidents and ppl getting hurt.

This sounds like what it was like here in melb 10-15 years ago too .

No cops ever came or anything.

Ive been there last few weeks just to spectate, havent seen any accidents. But seriously what do the authorities expect, letting events like dragtag run without dicking kunts imo would probably help keep illegal drag racing to a minimum. Like who.t.f can be stuffed driving all the way up to calder and paying $50 for two runs. That said, yes there are plenty of heroes that act up.

$115,000 plus the 300 x 200 for the ped's plus misc fines totalling $200k and not one life saved!

The police are going to have one hell of a end of year party with the Sheriffs and EPA, if they keep going this way..
At least the road toll will remain uneffected, if not higher now than last year!

Vicroads would be loving it to all these cars having to get RWC. $38.70 IIRC to book in for someone to inspect the car after RWC is down. Its as bad as the price they charge for rego these days!!

revenue raising is a pooooor defense.
you just can't get away with this shit anymore, fukk, you never could.
200 cars, 300 kunts on foot???
minimum 500 people we are talking about.

they are playing a game.
they send 5 units down to break it up when theres 40 cars there, hand out a few yellow stickers, it doesn't make the news.
maybe makes a local rag.
they wait till it blows up and you get 500 fukking people there, run a big bust, and the shits national.
last time they did it we got hoon laws.
we'll never get another dragstrip while this shit is happening.

thats true. look at brisbane though, from my place there is Willowbank about 1/2hr away and a burnout pad 10 mins. On the other side of town is Lakeside. This doesnt stop the industrials going off though!

I don't see the issue.

Play up, get caught, bitch.

Don't play up, laugh at ppl who bitch.

Anyone who got their car impounded probably deserved it. I'm suprised nobody has tried to play the "It's racist" card yet. Fkwits.
