Vic police impound Lewis Hamilton's car
March 27, 2010 - 6:10AM

British Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton has had his car impounded under hoon laws after doing a burnout near the entrance to the Australian grand prix in Melbourne.

Police intercepted 25-year-old Hamilton on Fitzroy Street at about 9.15pm (AEDT) on Friday after noticing that his car skidded as it was driven out of Lakeside Drive, Albert Park, where the four-day event is being held.

Leading Senior Constable Scott Woodford said Hamilton's rear wheels were losing traction as he accelerated out of the intersection.

"He was disappointed with the incident but extremely cooperative with police," Snr Const Woodford told AAP.

"Given that Melbourne's on the world stage with a lot of interstate and international visitors, we would expect drivers to observe road rules."

Earlier on Friday Hamilton recorded the fastest lap time at a second practice session for the grand prix.

His late model silver Mercedes sedan was seized by police to be impounded in Preston, and he was charged on summons with improper use of a vehicle.

The car will be eligible for release from 9am (AEDT) on Monday.

It will be pushed through court in the next week too, because he cannot leave the country with a pending court date.

The impound seems a bit dramatic.. I thought they reserved impounding cars for more serious stuff?

Isn't the line usually "failure to maintain control of vehicle"?

Guess you can't pull shit like that on an F1 driver.

thats what i hate so much about these impoud rules.
its basically at the discretion of the policeman at the time...
accelerate too fast, even no wheel spin, and they could deem that as hooning...
but i think they would be using this as a high class example.
still, setting an example that they are **** more than anything lol

Why wouldn't they be able to?

One would assume MB Australia is the registered owner..

Yahoo7 News wrote:Vic top road cop hits back at Webber

Victoria's top road cop is disappointed at comments from Aussie Formula One driver Mark Webber who said Australia was becoming a "nanny state" and called the country's speeding laws "ridiculous".

In an apparent swipe at police arresting the former F1 champion Lewis Hamilton when he was caught doing a burnout in his car in Melbourne on Friday night, Webber said he had spent the past few days "dodging the ridiculous speeding and parking (rules) and all the nanny state country that we have down here in Australia".

Hitting back after Webber's comments, which came during a horror weekend on Victoria's roads, the state's top traffic cop Deputy Commissioner Ken Lay said the work of police was likely to have saved the lives of many of the driver's fans.

"I'd be so bold to say, too... that there's probably quite a few Mark Webber fans still alive today because of the work we do," Mr Lay told ABC Radio on Monday.

He said Webber's comments were disappointing after a weekend in which four people had died in speed-related crashes.

"So, disappointing, not helpful at all and hopefully on reflection he'd wish he hadn't said it," Mr Lay said.

He added that Webber had undermined police work in trying to make roads safer.

"Mark Webber's in a unique position where he's got the ability to influence the behaviour of road users.

"He's missed an opportunity, he's probably undermined our message to a degree and that comes on the end of a horror weekend on our roads, where four people have died as a result of speeding."

Meanwhile, the Institute of Public Affairs (IPA) says Webber was spot-on in claiming Australia has become a nanny state when it comes to what we can and can't do.

"Webber's comments expose the incremental efforts by government to regulate and tax every part of our lives," said IPA spokesman Tim Wilson.

"The problem is the government is introducing the nanny state bit by bit so most Australians don't notice how far we're down the path."

But Liberty Victoria president Michael Pearce says Webber should be looking in his own backyard before criticising others.

He said the Victorian government had been highly intrusive in its legislation surrounding the staging of the grand prix at Albert Park, suspending the normal rights of citizens to enjoy local amenities.

"Mark Webber should become familiar with that legislation before he shoots his mouth off about anti-hoon laws," Mr Pearce told AAP.

"There was a raft of highly contentious legislation which deprived the residents of the surrounding areas of all their normal rights of protest and amenity and this was so people like Mark Webber could engage in legalised hooning."

Its sad when a little skid is compared to stupid kents doing shit speeds and killing poeple. There are always going to be people dying on our roads, and it wont be from skids.

Hmm...

If you have an insane person, in an asylum with other insane people, running around causing riots, what do the authorities do? They put them all in straightjackets and lock them up in padded rooms.

I hope you guys are still following me...

Now, if you "medicate" the insane, you don't get any riots! You get all the inmates floating away in fairy land and everyone gets along. AND, if one inmate forgets to take his/her meds? On, with the straightjacket and into the padded room!

1: This "medication" that's missing from our roads is also known as... EDUCATION!

Example: My brother-in-law is from Finland. Home to some of the best drivers in the world, especially the WRC. Now, for him to obtain his driver's license, he had to accumulate a minimum of 1000 hours(!), as required by "driver education law", of assisted training. That's almost 12 months of lessons @ 4 hours a day. These guys are TAUGHT (males and females), how to power slide a car! Irregardless to the fact that it snows in Finland , they want you to be able to control your car in EVERY situation! Melbourne's weather charges every 5 minutes! What education do we have for that? How to do a 3 point turn in some quiet back street and to not forget to slip the instructor that $50 to let you pass!

2: What about the "asylum" that is missing, especially here in Victoria, for all the inmates! WTF! All these events are being promised and cancelled, no access to proper venues/racetracks to let the "inmates" run free. No wonder there is CHAOS!

In the U.S., almost a dozen of the nation's drag strips are holding FREE ENTRY events. They use money acquired from the SPONSORS to hold events that fill the stands every week. Bringing in almost 10 times the crowd than what they used to bring. Now, from a marketing aspect, attracting 10 times the crowd to your sponsored event equals more business. Can anyone see why this wouldn't work?

Just sharing my 2 cents.

agreed, i laughed when they commented on Webber.
then the cop goes 'i hope he regrets what he said'

i'm sure he will when he's over in italy driving 300km/h

id love to see the coppers face, when in court he has to say that he deemed hamilton to " not be in full control of his vehicle". lol

not that hamilton will have to appear. only his lawyer.

but hamilton gets paid millions to drive right on the edge of control every week. this copper probably hasnt heard the tyres squeel in his divvy van once lol

I bet all F1 fans have much better driving records than bogan V8 samecars followers.

Sure the cop still pulls him over and educates him that displays like that aren't welcome in Aus and that could he please drive responsibly to set a good example.

Have a nice day!
