Whats better?
Gotta love the low down torque and sound of a V8 here, no flutter can beat that. Thought I'd open a can of worms

Whats the budget?
A 400rwkw XR6T with a modded stock turbo doesnt have a whole lot of lag and lots of torque from 2000rpm.

Yeah, anything with a Motec system exhaust and a stand alone fuel management system ought to be able to do 10s. 10s are pretty quick for a FWD street car...

Sif!, your lucky you didn't blow the welds on the intake!
I like the little ol' wheezer, dunno why, mental retardation perhaps? but i love it and i would feel so wrong with anything else.

As much as I love V8s, when comparing the Aussie Ford I6T to the V8 found in Aussie Falcons there is not much of a contest - 'bang for your buck'. The I6T has so much (cheaper) potential to make it clean up the heavy DOHC 5.4l V8s that Ford/FPV has to offer... (Waits for the aftermarket all-alloy, Dart/S-V-Oh/super-dooper blocks, with gold-plated heads topped, with a twin-screw blower brigade...) But in saying that I much prefer the sound of a V8. Ford Oz just can't compete in that department. Euro V8s (and Chevys for that matter) are a whole different ball game.

I agree, sadly we pretty much got the shit end of the stick when it came to the factory V8's the only ones worth while were in special models i.e. GT's, Sprint, T series and FBT's and even then they need a bit of a wake up call. The Boss motors are a damn sight better but so is the I6T, we need to learn from those crazy mofos in the U.S. they can turn the mod motor into a monster and the wheezer into a screamer!

About two years ago I would have agreed with you on the sound of a V8 being awesome, however i have gotten over it recently. Now when I here a V8 it just sounds old and dated to me. Personal opinion I guess.
I have a great love for the sound of a turbo 6 with a screamer pipe at full noise, it's like a friggn jet plane, I love it!

It really depends on your budget and what you want to use your car for.
If you were after something really simple and didnt have much time I would go to Rocket industries and buy a crate engine. These things are really well priced and you can get ones that have heaps of power, all you have to do is bolt it in.
If you were modifying a V8 in comparison to a I6, then the V8 will probably be cheaper in some regards- for example to get a set of aftermarket rods for a Chev or Ford V8 will be cheaper than that of a I6 (often Rocket and other distributors have specials for like $390-450 for 8 rods whereas most rods for a I6 will be around the $1000 mark at least) similar story with pistons, cranks, cams and other components. Due to the high volume of V8's out there.
Machining will be a little more expensive but overall...
Having said this I am more of a turbo fan, they can make really good power and be very reliable when done right, they are a barrell load of fun to drive and can be a good bang for buck option.
I know I will get toasted for this comment, but I reckon a 2JZ in a falcon would be nuts, these are a seriously strong engine(not the falcon isnt) 3litre and you can get parts for them off the shelf that can make mega mumbo yet still pretty cheaply.
At the end of the day it comes down to your preference.
Cheers

The beauty of the falcon six is that you don't have to replace heaps of stuff to go fast - even a dead stock engine in good nick will cop 10psi all day, 15 maybe with a good tune. The rods are good up to silly power levels (TUFED6s car and many others are testament to this) and an ACL race series rebuild kit isn't that expensive.
I really good rebuild/port and cam jobbie with bigger exhaust valves on an I6 head shouldn't cost more than 2k, what kind of cam/head combo can you get for a V8 for that much dosh?
If you want good cheap power, get a big turbo and engine management, bolt it onto a stock 6 and go fast

Cost you less than a stroker wheezer and make more power.
Obviously, the throttle response wouldn't match a well tuned N/A V8, but throttle response doesn't count for much when you've just been hosed by a turbo 6

I'd agree with putting a 2J in nearly anything that doesn't already come with a genIII, but not an I6 falcon. Dollar for dollar, the 4litre is a match for the 2j right up until you start going spastic with the HP requirements, then maybe the 2j comes out on top.
For the time and effort required to buy and fit a 2j you could have a good turbo setup on the stock 4 litre, and for the cost of upgrading all the 2j gear (injectors, turbo/s cams) you could build a very very stout 4.0.
4 litre > *.* in a Falcon application.

This might be a double post, my computer is shitting me
My comments on the V8 were simple, if you didnt want to spend lots of time making manifolds and all the other stuff associated with a turbo car then a crate engine is a good option. You can get an engine that will make 500hp for pretty cheap without getting your hands dirty.
Having said this I would go turbo everyday of the week.
Understand that I am not having a go at the integrity of a Falcon I6, I have much respect for how strong and fast they are/ can be.
I agree that the falcon has already got the engine in it so its relatively easy to make and bolt up the external part required to turbo it and get some good power.
The guys who are making 600+hp on a Falc I6 are all using auto's, getting tailshafts made up, using management, bigger injectors/fuel pumps, making or buying exhaust manifolds/exhausts then rebuilding the engine with bigger cams and what not.
If you were to do a 2J falcon you are doing pretty much exactly the same thing(with the exception of fitting the engine), but you would have an engine the can rev to 7500+ and run a higher MPH.
I am very aware of what is in TUFED6's car/engine because Iain/John, my brother and I built the car.
Iain/John is also very aware that with the power and more importantly the torque his engine is making, it wont last forever.
If you were to ask Iain how much he would pay for 2000rpm more he would open up the cheque book.
As I said it depends on what you want to do, how much time and money you have and your personnal views.
Cheers

Im with this guy. ^^^ I would love a 2J in my EA.
The extra revs that the 2J has puts it way in front IMO. A 3 litre may spool later but its got way more rpm left to go once the ford 6 has hit the limiter.
Good for things such as GT42's and the like

Pfft 2j....1.5Jz

(1j head, 2j bottom-end).
There becoming more and more popular with drifters due to to there power/torque, a few that spring to mind are Paul "Aussie" Austins HKS built JZX81, S13 with 1jz, Morpowa/CMBMX S1580 with a 2JZ. Theres also a cressida booting around S.A with 410rwkw...enters burnout comps and starts his burnouts in 3rd.
Between an boosted 6 or a worked V8 in an E-series...give me the 8. Hopfully one day I'll have a stroked and boosted V8

follow in the steps of LTDHO

1 question are we talking e-series cars in this thread or 6T VS V8 in general??
i have to say if i was asked this question a month ago i'd say turbo 6 no question. but since my 6 (be it NA) hit a tree and i have bought and been driving an ED XR8 since sunday, i cant get the smile off my face. The torque is amazing and the sound in mind blowing!!!
i have changed from always wanting an I6T up to the morning of sunday 25th november to dreaming about working my V8 in the afternoon... i'd happily go down the forced induction path, but i think if i do it'll be on an 8.

I'm in awe of this car: Bugatti Veyron. (Volkswagen)
64 valve, 8L W16, quad-turbocharged. 408.47 km/h average top speed. Quad cam. 7 gear paddle-shift manual. Car is cooled by 10 (yes 10!) radiators.
0-97 km/h in 2.46 secs.
0-400 is 10.2 secs (@ 143mph) which seems odd but 0-400 km/h in 55 secs

Fuel efficiency: 24L/100 km (highway) ... lol with a 100L fuel tank!
Fuel runs out in 12 mins when travelling over 400 km/h. Tires will last 15
And the best part: The one mechanic in the whole world that knows how to service these is flown anywhere in the world at a significant premium (which I'd hate to think of).

Everyone here talking about V8 and shite! Just get a Veyron and put them all to rest.

It depends, if I was given two cars, one V8 and one I6 and they both had the same reliability/power i'd probably go the V8 just because they sound good.
But if I was to build something my self with my own money i'd choose the I6 for sure.

the answer is clear if youve got over 25k for an engine budget the v8 is the choice but if you dont get the 6, by the time you buy all the stroker material and the sportsman block ( aroudn 3500 alone ) then buy a twin screw blower or TT setup you will be well into the 25k range mayby even 30k my friend josh spend 20k on his engine and hes just got a brand new stock block ( i told him to spend the extra money for a sportsman but oh well when he lunches it all ill have is i told you so.... )

Look at the size of the turbos on that thing! Plenty of room for an upgrade!
8 Litres to play with, you'd spool a couple of T51Rs no worries

Pity that for your 2 million dollars you get a car that is only 0.6 seconds faster than TUFED6's 4th ever pass down the quarter, and slower than EABAturbo's EA

"What's the retail on one of those?"
"More than you can afford pal...Bugatti"
