Mario and Luigi where both fat?

I'm trying to win an argument with my mate.
In the original Mario brothers game where both Mario and Luigi the same size (fat) but different colors?
Anyones got any arguments as we do not have the original game please tell us

Mario was small and fat, Luigi was tall and skinny.

No, you are correct, in the original NES mario, both characters were identical, just different colours.

They did however change when the later games came out.
