HEAVILY tinted cars are being blamed for hiking up the rate of crashes in Melbourne, with shaded cars under the police spotlight from today.
Operation Clear View follows a series of crashes involving heavily tinted cars, police said.
Pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists were among those left hurt by drivers unable to see where they are going, the head of the operation Sen-Constable Steve Hillman said.
“We intend on checking a large number of vehicles for roadworthiness, in particular we will be checking the level of tint,'' he said.
http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/victor ... 5885515333When are people going to be blamed for their lack of ability or pore road conditions going to be blamed. It looks like the police are blaming everything but driver ability and road conditions....

hate to be the devils advocate but....
theyre targeting 'illegal' tint, so not all tint... plus if if you seriously think dark tinted windows dont affect your vision at night then your as retarded as the pollies think we all are.
thats why there is a limit on tints, cos at night your vision is compromised.
obviously in a straight line you should see the cyclist youve been aiming for for the last 2kms, but come to that give way on a dark wet night in your car with 10-15% tints and chances are your not gonna see that cyclist coming through, or the pedestrian that is crossing the intersection....

interesting point but......
i'd still be impressed if anyone out there can name 3 different accidents in the last 10 yrs caused by dark tinted windows?

well if all the statistics we are quoted by the poo pushing powers that be, you'd imagine they must, otherwise my point of this being the latest revenue orientated dribble would be proven. Wouldn't it?

, no... surely they wouldnt do that... would they?
i dont know if this can really be put down to revenue raising though, they would get more with another speed amera somewhere.
id say its more of an excuse to target modified cars, under the guise of 'safety'

its like they just pick a random defectable issue and focus on that.
which in theory makes sense, but not suggesting that every single one of them contributes to an accident lol
'research shows drivers with no windscreen washer bottle are 99% more likely to have an accident'

Stupidly dark tint can be dangerous-yes but....how are they going to test if your tints if it's too dark or not? Shine their torch through your windows and just goes yeah....that's probably dark enough. Fix our roads or educate our drivers better would be money well spent.

The type of tint on a window will also play a role in how dark it looks, and to a lesser extent so does the colour of the car & its interior.
I had 20% metal film tint installed on my NF, and it looked way lighter than other cars that had had 'legal' tint. Night vision was no worse than my current car's factory tint.
Unfortunately this will be policed the same way everything else is... I.e If the police can't determine if your tint is legal or not, you will cop a defect and have to get it checked out and cleared, or possibly removed.
I wonder how this will affect limo drivers, and van drivers which can legally have 0% opacity on their rear-side windows and rear screen.

i dont know what the cops use here, but back home they carry a card (about the size of a credit card) and stick that behind the glass, if its legal tint then you can see the writing on it, if not, its too dark. and the highway patrol guys carry a meter that measure the vlt of the glass. pretty exact stuff really.

my old car had extremely dark windows, double 5% on the rear windows and rear quarters and single 5% on rear screen and front windows
it was hard to see out of at day let alone night time, i allways put the windows down at night at intercections. didnt cause an accident tho

100% is no tint
http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-glass-tinting.htmthe percentage represents how much sunlight gets through, eg 20 grade or 20% means 80% of the sunlight is blocked, legal is 30% or higher

i was the same, my old diamante had 5% all round (except windscreen obviously) and it was a prick at night, awesome during the day but.

you can see how dark the tint is by looking at the passenger front doors window which is partly down.

one thing to MAKE sure if anyone gets pulled over is the tint should be measured from the INSIDE out not looking into the car. thats where i think the cops are gona get alot of people with uv tint ext.
