Auto LS1s - slow-ish?

EDIT - updating details

Last night I was cruising home in the wagon, & I had an LS1 VTII Clubby behind me at a set of lights. The lights turned green & I cruised uphill at half-throttle. At about 40kph, the Clubby pulled out and overtook me. What surprised me was that it made a lot of noise (up to around 4500-5000rpm) but didn't exactly blast past me. Granted, we were going uphill & the Clubby had a carload of broteks, but I've had VR V6s overtake me with less fuss...

RAVEN, Johnny Z, Max, other LS1 owners on here: what were your LS1s like when stock & with extra people in them, did they seem to lose a lot of poke?

It just didn't seem to live up to its [TUFLSI] plates. And it didn't sound like it had a 5000rpm stally because it would've sat there the whole time, instead of changing gears to around the 3000rpm mark while still overtaking me.

who cares ? ;)

Max only has a cat back on his VZ and it runs 14.1, your EF would probably do a low 17. I don't see what you're getting at. 8-)

VZ has more power stock then VX doesn't it?
Add to the fact its got an extra few hundred kg's in it
then the fact its up hill

I reckon the EF would be lucky to get into the 17s actually. I was just really surprised at the percieved lack of go this Clubby had. I'm interested in input from LS1 owners on this site regarding their own experiences.

And that's why I made the thread homad :)

John - to put the Clubby's acceleration into perspective, I reckon the EB (+ passengers) would've kept up with it. And the EB is fairly shit after launch.

LS1s = heatsoak city, maxs did 14.1 with the fucker dead cold after a rainbreak.
And autos are sluggish as off the line, both johnny z's and max's suffered from that, they need diff gears as much as BTRs do.
Chuck a carload of people into the equation, uphill, and the fact its only VTII, its not THAT surprising.

Sunny I think you & Damo are misreading why I'm posting. Ignore the fact that I was in the EF, it's not the point, and I never bother with anything in the wagon anyway because my gf's meteor is quicker than it ;)

Yeah but you know Commando, they are quick with fk all mods.

I think the answer's in your own post - "we were going uphill & the Clubby had a carload of broteks"

We have bingo. I didn't realise they had heatsoak/tall diff gears issues.

Sunny - I know uphill + weight = slower, but I was amazed at how much of a difference it made in this particular car, I would've expected much more from it despite these hurdles.

when my car was stock i was pretty impressed, compared to my manual EB, stock my car ran a 14.2 @ 99MPH and thats the 220kw motor and im yet to run it again with all the mods of done, my tuner reckons 240rwkw is about 315fwkw and is good for a 12 second pass

with a car stock and full of people i had a drag with a turbo astra and it was neck and neck till about 80kmh then i blew him away if that has any relevance.

Yeah don't under estimate LS1 powah.
You might jump one off the line and think you're a bit of a mad kent, but when you try run it again with a rolling start... FCKEN SNAP KENT, you just got owned.

Damo - yep, I realised my error & edited accordingly :D

Dan - where's the Buick 3.8 on that list? :P

Jared - Dave's been stomped by many an LS1. A sleeper VT or VX (executive with steelies) was suddenly 10 carlengths ahead of me (rolling start for both) while my BTR was dedicing which gear to go with whilst in D (1st? 2nd? Park?), it was extremely embarassing.

lol sikest thread ever!!! because its about LS1s well yea the vt has i think around 200ish fw kw and the vz has either 235 or 240 so thats already quite an improvement. The VZ is pretty average when you just plant it as Jared has said it does have 3.07 diff gears and a shocking tune to make sure dumbkents dont spin off the line. It gets a bit slower with people in the car but whose car doesnt.. if there is one thing i can say Dave compared to the eseries the ls1 seems to be a bit louder at low revs i can always hear it over the radio on the freeway and its only at around 1800 bit worried what will happen with gears.. but yea maybe thats why it sounded like it was reving mine sounds like im hooning even when im not.. also they dont really make power till u rev em makes em just a noisy car to get around in. I can pull past a car slowly and make it sound tuff as and as if im hooning lol!

Yea heatsoak is gay mine was running 14.9s by the end of the day so its a big factor on them more so then say my el which only got like .1 or .2 sec slower. Stock ls1's are no race car by any stretch but i think everyone knows what they are capable of with very minor mods. Im quite impressed with the power for stock to be honest just for day to day driving it just seems so effortless.. and when u stick the boot in it feels pretty decent too.

Yours was the first one I've ever driven, and I was well impressed.
They FEEL quicker then XR6Ts cause the genner you gotta rev and it loves it.
I reckon for a big auto luxury sedan its a pretty fun car to drive.

Someone should put an LS1 in an AIT EA. Then another AIT with a 2J, then they can both race Dan for slips.

No rotaaars in list Damo, I call shenanigans.

I'd much prefer an LS1 or 2JZ in my EA than the BA motor. cbf spending more cash on it though. Maybe a 2jz in an ef one day :)

Genners go alright, after about 4,000rpm.
That's why you'll go alright of the line with them.
After 4grand, they pull their heads off.
Thats the only problem with heatsoak, when are you ever gonna give someone a crack when you've just pulled out of your driveway. That's the one bit that sucks balls.
Very impressed with the 14.1 Max's car got though! I gave it a 14.6 at best! But i guess i've only ever been in it when its warmed up. :P

Im sure its easily fixed with tunes and OTR CAI and stuff like that there are too many consistent crazy quick ones on the road for them all to be slow when they warm up

They're a bit of a mixed bag. I've been ripped by a couple, but I've also smashed plenty.

Why isn't LS2 on that list? Or RB26DETT? Or Barra 240T? :P

Dude 250kw hahaha thats fucken mad haha now i got numbers to brag about i didnt really even know what it had when ever people have asked me im like i dunno it goes alright.. hahaha thanks buddy

Thats probably the best CAI ive seen those engine covers look mad aswell ill have to get some of those too...

Jared
I doubt itll be enough to beat a supercharged machine unless urs has tuning probs and all that other shit that goes wrong with blown cars... but yea prob next yr or something not enough money to do it all at once plus i wanna save up a bit and maybe get some other work at the same time save retuning twice and all that...first gotta figure my 19s not fitting situation and getting a car bra for the nats!

Urs isn't 250kw Max,
It'd be 245kw.
No Commodore other than a VT Clubby, etc came with 250kw.
AFAIK:
VT2 - 220kw
VX - 230kw
VY - 240kw
VZ - 245kw
VE - 270kw

****, by the time i can afford to own a new car like this, they'll be 500kw the way they're going!

VZ Calais is actually 235 KW.

Cylinders: V8
Capacity: 5665 cc
Bore x Stroke (mm): 99 x 92
Induction: Sequential fuel injection.
Valvetrain: Overhead valves, pushrods, 2 valves / cylinder.
Compression ratio: 10.1 : 1
Maximum power: 235 kW @ 5600 rpm
Maximum torque: 460 Nm @ 4000 rpm
Redline / Cutout:
Recommended Fuel: 91 Octane (ULP)

Unless the 'High Output' version was an option on the Calais then it's 250 KW.

Same features as standard V8, plus: High Performance Dual Exhaust.

Maximum power: 250 kW @ 5600 rpm
Maximum torque: 470 Nm @ 4800 rpm

So true. My XR6T supposedly has 240kW and XR8s have 260kW, but on the road there is nothing between them.
