Unlike our American Ford enthusiast the general public haven’t realised the collectible value of our limited edition Australian Ford Police Cars.
We have recognised the importance and value of the Land Drover and its Army models with collectors refitting them back to original army issue.
The US guys value their Victoria Crown Police cars, purchasing and refitting them back to original issue, marked and un-marked units preserving and showing these interesting vehicles.
Ford Australia and Australia Police have recognised* and stated, we have a National Police Vehicle in the “Police Service Packs” namely the Opt20 Fords.
So all being on the same page with terminologies Ford Aust make basically a few models within models they are; General Public, Taxi, Police and Racing.
Those of us that have Opt20 own a “Police Car” that are “not in service.”
The vehicle itself cannot be termed ex-police car. The fact that Ford make this Opt20 originally as a police vehicle only under gov contract (Ford Aust wont even release info on gov contacts, never mind sell Opt20’s direct to the public) the fact these are not an after market upgrades make it a “Police Vehicle Model” in its own right.
Rarity depends on how many Opt20’s were made and left for restoring and preservation.
“Ex-Police car” relates to ownership only. The vehicle is either “in service” with a Police Department or “not in service” sold off to the public. Ex-police, (may not be a Opt20).
Personally as a collector I am more interested in what Ford originally produced and numbers not whom the previous owner/s were.
The fact that Police Departments sell to the public after two years/ 40,000km places Ford Police Vehicle Opt20 legally in public ownership, enabling the collecting public to own, restore and drive police cars.
These can be head turners, even under closer inspection the unmarked police cars that have had the original auctioned off restored police fittings re-installed, its just a fact that yes it is a Police car, it is not in service and the driver/owner is not a police officer being the facts of the matter.
Don’t be mislead Police Chiefs want you to purchase their old police cars, even if its just the traffic cop that wants to pull you up for full road worthy and licence check every second day!
Of course the vehicle has to be road worthy but police lights and sirens cannot be used on any public roads. However on closed roads for charity rallies and car shows on private property or show grounds the Aust Ford Police vehicle can be shown and displayed in its full colourers.
NB. Some may perceive that one could be impersonating a police office by owning an out of service fully decked out police car but that would be like saying a person is impersonating an Army Officer or a Terrorist by driving a Army Land Drover or truck, Ambulance Officer with a restored Ambulance or State Firer Fighter Employee with a restored Fire-Truck !
Impersonating: would require criminal intent to deceive and disclosure by that person stating that, “I am a police officer.” and Determined by a Magistrate not bias other parties.
