Does anyone know much about these things? Sunny?

I'm wanting to find out more information about a vehicle that's been classified as a repairable writeoff.

Also, what's the deal with selling a repairable writeoff? Is the seller obliged to disclose this to a potential buyer or is it only if the buyer asks or does a check on the vehicle?

Cheers

Yeah I have, Wayne.

I really just wanted to know how detailed they are.

From the VicRoads website..
Information in a VIP includes:
if the vehicle has been recorded as written off, including the date, type and severity of damage

Would it say if the car specifically has front/rear damage is it just kind of vague?

When a vehicle is written off, certain codes are recorded against the VIN. For example, a car that's been written off for hail damage will be recorded as H, and then the area of the car that's been affected has another code that's a number. I think 14 represents a whole car, so H14 is "Hail Damage to whole vehicle" - if that makes sense.

Anyways, the VIP Certificate pulls the codes from the national database of VIN's and interprets them for you, so the damage that's been done to the car from a write-off is clearly shown in the certificate. It is still pretty vague though.

In regard to selling a repairable write off - YES the seller must disclose to the acquirer that vehicle has previously been written off and recorded on the national register of written off vehicles. There is a declaration paragraph above the box where the disposer signs on the transfer form.

If you knowingly sell a car that's listed on the WOVR without disclosing it, you leave yourself open to be sued pretty easily if the new owner finds out and isn't happy about it.

There are HEAPS of car on carsales that are repairable write off's. None of give any indication that it's a damaged vehicle, so just use VicRoads to check before hand.

How does this affect insurance? EG you buy a repairable write off from auction, and you spend cash on fixing it, do insurance companies deny applications because it was a RWO or give a silly price because the car has history?

Shouldn't affect insurance at all.
If you can get it re-registered it is treated like any other car.

Yeah I meant on the internet tho. The descriptions that people write don't give any hint that that car has been in a smash.

How can you prove as the buyer that the seller did not tell you that the car was a repairable write off ?
