AUI vs. AUII XLS?

Postby oneredED » January 1st, 2011, 7:21 pm

Hey guys, other than the brakes, what are the differences between AUI and AUII XLS utes?

Got my eye on this ute at work (see pic), and haven't had time to check the brakes or build plate yet, so I'm not sure if it's series one or two.

It's got the orange side indicators, so im 98.444% sure its a Series 1.

Some of the series 1 still used the shitty headgasket, I think ford changed them to the metal ones in series 2.

The clear side repeaters came with AUIII. The utes barely changed on AUII. The most obvious change will be the interior. The series II got a sharper looking centre stack

XLS's get Alloys, XR Suspension, Cruise Control, Carpet, Painted Grille, Body Coloured Side Moulds, Tonnau Cover, Low Coolant Sensor, Power Windows.

Defiantly worth getting an XLS IMO.

Turns out it's a series 1... not so bad... but turns out it also has rust under the weatherseal on the A-pillar seam. NO GO!

Thanks for the help guys.

Is the AU rust common? Was it fixed in series 2? I'd imagine it's a design fault more than anything?

Haven't heard of much rust although one forum member (IIRC it was EFFalcon) had an AU at one point that was completely riddled with it. I've got a small rust patch on the drivers door of my AU, above the mirror. Other than that I haven't got any and haven't heard of many that do.

Can you do me a favour please Dezza? Lift the weatherseal/doorseal on the A-pillar right near the door jamb (where the rubber goes to about 2x as big), and tell me if there's rust on that seam where it has been spot welded together?

NP. Just checked it out and there's a tiny spot about 5mm in diameter on the seam. Not bad really. Paint bubbled up there slightly and that's about it. There's a fair bit of crap behind that seal so I can see how it could rust there

AU rust is definitely semi-common.

My old AU3 was showing rust by the time it was 3 years old :drinks2: Nearly every other AU I've had has shown some type of rust as well.

My last AU (S2) was the only AU I've had that didn't have some form of rust.

Rust is common as from AU-BF2, unsure about FG.

The AU and AUII ute brochure's are almost identical lol. I remember playing spot the difference when I was 14 and got them in the mail. It's pretty much only the interior that's different cosmetically, but there were over 2000 changes from AU1-AU2 apparently!

My 17,000km AU 1 Forte had big rust in the sills, it also had a fist size rust hole behind the guard (near the little vacuum tank on the drivers side)

such a shame :(

Find a B-Series that doesn't have rust there and I'll give you whatever's in my left pocket.

Think your BA doesn't have rust in the Boot that hasn't been fixed?

Stick your head in the boot & look up under the Strut, its there.

Off topic (or not) a few AU II sedan changes from memory include laminated firewall for reduced engine noise, lower rear suspension, front electric windows, deeper rear bumper and CD player - and of course the bigger grille. I'm thinking at least the firewall would apply to the utes, but I'm really not sure.

The front electric windows came with the AU1 update in '99.
