Rim Widening

Postby sticman » February 11th, 2011, 8:54 am

Hi all,

Just wanted to know where to call in relation to getting a set of rear stock rims widened for my wagon.
Since dropping the V8 in it, I have chewed thru 2 sets of el-cheapo rear tyres due to a heavy right foot and the new found love of a windsor on song!!!

I want to get a set extended to 9 - 9.5" and then get the widest tyre under the rear as possible.

So I would really appreciate a few numbers to start my search of wheel places in Melbourne and preferrably close to Altona North.

Also, does anyone know what is the widest size tyre that will fit under my Ef wagons arse?

Thanks in advance

widest tyre will heavily depend on the offset and width of the wheel.

Have a look at tyre prices before you get the rims widened, there aren't many non-standard sized 15" tyres available any more, they're pretty expensive.

Really?
Ok, so what about 16" or 17" then?
I'm not looking for a expensive sticky brand tyre, just something wider to help out.

IIRC Toyo make a decent 245 and 255, and Bridgestone Eagers are back in all their raised white lettered 80's glory, apart from them and the old school Wide Oval remakes, the only other options I know of are semi-slick drag tyres.

17's would be the cheapest option, decent 235/45R17's are under $150 each.

You can go as wide as you like in tyre size as long as you get your offset right. Im not sure what the max is you can run on an e-series but my brother is running 275/35/18 rear and 255/35/18's front on his nl.

Maybe someone with mass knowledge, like TUFED6, could put threads for these questions as stickies in the appropriate sections.

we don't need 20 stickies in each area.

if someone wants to put up a FAQ for each area (that had links to relevant topics), that would be more appropriate.

but searching works

I had 255/70/15's and they JUST fitted onto a standard 6.5inch rim.

Tyre wise, youll probably have to look at a Mickey Thompson or BF Goodrich, and they arent cheap.

wouldn't a 255/55 or 60 be a better size? Or was it a case of use what you had?

Its amazing what will fit with the right offsets and a little massage. My uncle has 295s on his XY not tubbed only gaurds rolled. tight fit!!

In theory yeah. Try finding a pair that aren't stupidly expensive, or drag radials though.

How wide a tyre you can fit also depends on ride height. You could fit a 295 under the back of an E-Series without it sticking out if it was standard height. Plenty of people have 265s under the back of their lowered cars, they fit under my EF with lipped guards, but the exhaust hits on the drivers side.

Excellent idea.

As soon as I finish work today, I'm gonna get under the rear of the wagon with a tape and see what fits...
