I've got a couple of cars that I've
Got hold of and am considering fixing up and selling.

I'm currently costing it up and just getting opinions
On realistic maker prices

Car 1.

94 nc fairlane.
6cyl, resprayed, no rust and straight
Fairlane mags
A1 interior
All misc bits sorted.
New headlights etc
Mechanically sound, 180ks with wrecker motor warranty or less kms,
Roadworthy certificate unreg.

So basically a clean straight car with a low kms long motor and other bits sorted.


Car 2.
Ef wagon, usual condition, not a shitter not perfect, just normal
Same deal mechanically as above.

Opinions/ suggestions on expected sale prices?

$1000-$1500 at most for both.

So redbook, carsales and prices in trading post
Are all majorly inflated bs?

Yeah pretty well much mate e series cars aren't worth shit hard enough for people selling a turboed one these days

ya know they arent worth much to the educated.

but put them on carsales and ya get decent money.

i just sold my ef fairmont for 3600 no reg or rwc
i paid $2800 2 years ago and havent done anything to it. or needed to fix anything

thats it, people that know 'e' series know theyre faults, and how cheap they can be.

'normal' people dont. glass list has max value for my ef ghia at $7200. i wish lol, but hopefully the insurance company agrees with them.

ive been going round a lot of yards and theres still a surprising amount of them in yards, most in cheapie yards from$800-2000, but one had a el sapphire for $4500, and it was sold pending insurance when i was in there.

a nf 'lane 5.0 for 5k, and a 4.0l one at another yard for 4k. heaps of ef/el monts on yards for 3-5k. the yard that has the nf 5.0 just sold this

there only worth what someone is willing to pay look what people are asking on carsales put it for a lil more then other cars then price negotiable and if your happy with the price go ahead with it

I think it depends where you live. I mean down VIC and NSW judging by the quality of cars on this site clean e-series are an easy find. Up here in north queensland its a different story. I know when i clean up my fairmont ill be putting 4-5 grand on it, full stock.

I saw a maroon EB gli on the side of the road the other day. Full stock with scratches all over it for $3500. If that was on this site for sale no one would offer more than 500 bucks.

I think everyone should start asking more for their eseries might force up the price.

There recently was an EL Monty in a yard in Dandenong for $8,900 it lasted only a couple weeks and it was gone. There was a BA Ghia next to it for only 2k more and it sat longer than the EL

Up here everything sells above Redbook prices. The average price here for an EF GLI in good condition is about $3500,

it all depends whether you were able to get Craig Lowndes to sign your dash, thats a money maker right there.

racq here in brissy just valued my ef ghia at $5300. so they think theyre still worth money.

depends on the people buying the car at the end of the day.
i dont pay more than $1k for a car lol but im a tight ass and can fix the shit that is/does go wrong with it.
for people that cant fix the car them self, they are usually willing to pay a bit more for a car that isn't going to explode around the first corner.

but forums will always get a lower price regardless.

as said above, chuck it on car sales a bit higher than some others but mention that the price is negotiable for serious buyers.

SA is the place for cheap E-Series it seems. I paid $3200 for my EL just over 6 months ago, I thought that was expensive lol. Seen a couple in car yards for over 6k in Melb, though possibly without rust.. People still tell me it's a good looking daily. lol2them.
It's hard to give a true value on an E-series. We know they're worth about 2/5ths of fuckall, but to the untrained eye, EF/EL's look newish, they feel like a newer car, and on gas they cost less to run than a Corolla. If you happen to pop a trans and head gasket at the same time, a mechanic would charge about 2k to fix both. And really, for the price of an EF/EL, what could you buy that wasn't built in Korea?

I remember years ago (mid 90s) looking for an XD-XF with my old man (10-15 year old Falcons), most were around the 3-4k mark, and I remember all the dealers cars especially, they had broken handles, rust, shitty interiors, no LPG, 4 billion km, poxy wheels etc. Compare that to an EF/EL now....

Most of the times when I've sold a car in the past, I've used eBay. I would take a load of nice photos, do a good write-up, start at $1 no reserve for a 10 day listing and cross my fingers. Despite the apparent risk, I found that I always got a reasonable amount, as well as a quick sale. I never sold an E series specifically but I sold a KF Laser, Eunos 800M, Eunos 500 and a family member's Daihatsu Charade. For a more expensive car I'd be a little bit worried, but this is a good way to circumnavigate being unsure what a vehicle is worth.

The main problem with E series values is the mass availability of newer models in the secondhand market. That not only includes AUs and BAs but the likes of the VT Commodore range which potentially has more showroom appeal as well as a larger number on the market.

After having my fair share of disaster stories, the sensible advice that I normally give to buyers is to buy on finance and thus have controlled repayments. With the exception of the typical member here who is handy with the elbow grease, owning an older car can mean low running costs one month, then $1k or $3k in repairs the next - all with no resale. I would go as far as buying no older than an FG which would cost as little as $70-80 per week and in theory not require major repairs for some time. On the flip side, if everyone did this the world would be a fairly boring place with no turbo E series since everyone would just buy late models that meet their requirements and call it a day.

As for selling, do your best and don't fuss too much; remember it's all toy money at this level anyway, even compared to an annual fuel/rego/insurance/repairs bill.

as for said nc fairlane, i see no reason why you dont put 4-5k on it and wack it up on carsales. sounds pretty good, and someone like me might come along and buy it at that price. i paid 5k for my grandpa spec 5L nc lane 2 years ago. i had no idea what they were worth at the time, i was looking for an el ghia, then found the lane by chance, thought it looked good and took it for a spin and bought it there and then. surely im not the only person that would pay that much?

I bought my ef for $300 off ebay, and my old ef I swapped for a ke70 , I guess it's all about the time of the year aswell, tax time seems to be when a heap of stuff sells, just try your luck with 4 - 5k and see who bites at them, eventually they'll sell it's all about how patient you are
