welder for bodywork

Postby wolfblass » August 3rd, 2011, 2:10 am

Just wanted some help with choosing a welder for car panels. were looking at grafting a steel bonnet bulge onto an el bonnet but we are also looking at doing sill panels, bulkheads etc on some of our old school cars which were building.

I know i would need a MIG but my question is whats a good brand/power too choose for these types of jobs?

For bodywork cheap and nasty welders will suffice. You wont really be running any beads of weld. If you're welding outside then a gasless would be the go. People say gasless is shit but that's garbage, sure it's harder to make a nice, strong weld but still very possible. Your main aim with panel welding is avoiding distortion and it doesn't take much to burn through a car panel. If you're going for a gas mig then get something that can post flow the gas or chances are you'll get porosity or even worse, the tack bubbles up and grows an appendage or something.
