Boosting an E-Series 4.0l questions

Postby *rayman* » August 30th, 2011, 3:15 pm

Ok guys,

I've got a few questions about boosting an e-series 4.0l.

I'm not new to e-series falcons, i've had an ea spac years ago with heaps of mods done, mostly setup by the previous owner. I've had a couple of xr8's/5.0l fairmont etc, done all the usual mods with these. Now i'm in an XR6 XH ute, it's in reasonable nick.

I've just come out of an LS1 with a fair amount of work done, and in standard form the XR6 doesn't really excite me.

Toying with the idea of boosting it at some stage in the future. Looks to be an easy way to get power. Problem is, i have no idea where to start with it. I don't know how to work out what size exhaust housing etc to make boost when it supposed to.

Looking to replace a clutch, maybe do a head gasket, and then run a safe 5-8psi boost through standard bottom end. Hoping to just pick stuff up when i come across a bargain. Is this acheiveable with a rising rate reg and nothing else?

If i buy a log style manifold, what type of flange am i wanting it to have? Obviously this reflects what type of turbo i'll have to run. (unless i get flange changed etc).

At what stage do i need to start changing fuel pump, injectors, computer and coils?

PS - I've already got an expensive toy, so just looking to liven up my daily a bit. I'm not looking to spend the sort of money you guys pump into your e-series.
project: 68 BB Camaro
daily: 97 XH XR6 ute
previous rides: EB 5.0l GHIA, EF XR8, ED XR6, VT R8 Clubby, XF ute, and others not worth mentioning

have a search through the build threads mate plenty of people doing this and making good power.
If i where you and wanting to save money/do it on the cheap you'll need to do as much of it yourself as you can.
Throw an AU head gasket on it straight away (genuine from ford for memory $100?) its seems to be holding together nicely on mine and im making 260rwkw @12psi.
Have a look at the snort kits or the like and this will give you an idea of what different size turbo's will limit you at powerwise.
Look in the for sale section on here too people are always selling of lightly used turbo's that are relatively cheap.
Have a look at the j3 chips and allow cash for a tune and you'll nut it all out.
Project- elxr6 with boost

Daily ED wagon which i think may require boost
