Sussing out insurance for P platers...

I'm going to pick up my new car on Saturday so I've been looking up insurance prices. Being a male, having had my license under a year, and the type of car makes my only plausible option to get the vehicle registered in Mum's name and put myself as a listed driver, otherwise the premium is up to $6000 with another couple thousand in excess. If I have the insurance under Mum's name, but the car is registered in my name, will this be a problem?
Cheers, Chris.

Something doesn't sound right? maybe talk to them in person.
According to some sites I've looked at, I can get a BF MK II XR-6 turbo insured for $75 a week, $19,500 cover, which adds up to $3600 a year, and a $2000 excess. I'm 19 and I'm on my P's, and lost my licence once as well..
I haven't actually got insurance yet, so I'd probably get denied if I ever called up and asked for it lol.
Try raising your excess.

Got a quote from RACV, $150 a month and $1500 excess. Doesn't seem like a bad option.

It's probably about right. Hell, my AU XR8 was going to be $3500/yr when I was 22, hence I only had 3rd party. Try shopping around the major companies, I got full comp on my NC for $502/year with my driving record listed, along with all mods listed just by shopping around.

I just tried sgic, which re-directed me to NRMA because I'm in NSW, for a P-plater to insure a BF MK II XR-6 Turbo;
Comprehensive
$1,699 pa
Comprehensive Insurance
Full coverage for your car
Covers other cars or property you might damage
Agreed value: $22,900
Basic excess: $800
EDIT: Maybe its to do with your location?

Would've thought a small country town in the sticks would be good from an insurer's point of view?

Get it registered in your mums name too? Then have you listed as a driver..
I can't understand why some people pay 2-3g a year for full comp on cars that are worth 10g or so..

If the insurance company finds out that it's actually my car though, which would not be hard at all, they wouldn't pay out.

My AU xr6 was quoted as 2.5k full comp, with a value of 10k from AAMI. They seemed to be the cheapest, and the area I lived in at the time was deemed as a high risk area.
