URGENT HELP :( 4.0 motor change motor no starty :(

Thanks to Dan and Gill + 8 hours or so of labour we got the EA's motor changed over to the ED 4L I had sitting in my garage.

Anyways, it's all plugged in and fine now, but it won't start! It's not getting spark or fuel. The fuel pump doesn't prime. Thinking some big plug has been over looked? Cranks fine, but obviously without the pump, injectors or spark it wont fire.

Have checked TFI / Dizzy by plugging TFI loom in to another distributor and earthing it. Normally doing that with the accessories on it would prime the pump, then as you turn the dizzy each injector will fire. None of that is happening.

Any ideas? Initiall the ED manifold loom was put in but we swapped over to the EA loom assuming it had something to do with that. Obviously not :( Same sht different.. er.. loom?

Shit forgot you were doing this today, I watched the cricket all afternoon.

That's some weird shit. Did the car start and run fine still before you pulled the motor ? Did you swap the coils over ? Fuel reg ? dizzy ? I'd be putting all the known working shit on the ED motor.

i dunno, good luck with it.

Yeah started and ran well enough before but the motor was dying in the ass, leaky and noisy. Put this one in to fix all that but it doesn't even want to fukking fire in to life. WTF.

All the engine bay looms are hack from various stages of modifications through it's life including old alarm systems, a gas system and a number of spotties. It's pissing me off because with all of this I'm not sure where to start.

I'm sure one wire here or there has broken or dropped it's guts or snapped or some junk, but what wire would it be that controls the pump, injectors and spark! I was thinking fried ECU, but how!!

Isnt the ED loom setup for smartlock? Did you put in a ED ecu?

He swapped to EA injector loom to rule that out.

I don't have that much experience with EAs, but IIRC there are two plugs on the firewall for the injector harness, and the injector harness can be plugged in to either of these, but the car will only run when the harness is plugged into the correct plug (obviously).

Other than that, all I can think of is that you're blown a fuse somewhere along the line, or when you put the battery terminals back on there was a wire that came off that you didn't put back on :s

semi-dumb question, if the fuel pump isn't priming, how do you know that the injectors aren't working? (as in, they'd be dead even if the fuel pump was priming & supplying petrol to the fuel rail)

I've heard that fuel pumps sometimes respond to "percussive maintenance" (wrench to petrol tank :P). Check the relay to the fuel pump is working, a simple test is by swapping with the horn relay as that's an easy one to test for if it works or not. I had a sticky relay once & sometimes the pump wouldn't prime.

As for no spark... fukked if I know :( fried coil?

Sunny, doesnt the EA loom have the seperate pink TFI wire but EBII onwards has it integrated into the manifold/injector loom? Are you using the injector loom from the EA or the ED motor?

The ECU primes the fuel pump by activating one of the relays behind the drivers side headlight. I would get someone to turn the key on to just before start and you should hear the relay for the pump click on then off to prime the pump. If it doesn't then possibly the relay is dead or more likely since there is no spark either the ECU is cactus. Can you borrow an ECU off another car?

Ok ok, to clarify the EA manifold loom was the FIRST thing we changed when she didn't fire. That didn't work.

So this morning I got up and checked power to the TFI when it was KOEO (key on engine off) and found there was nothing in either of the red wires. One is KOEO 12v and the other is when it's cranking / running. I looked up the wiring diagram and found this same wire powers the ISC, injectors and a few other main bits and pieces - including the ECU.

I put 12v straight to the same wire at the ECU relay and cranked it and she fired. Still no fuel pump though, so I did the same thing. Now I've got the fuel pump and that red wire running off one of 12v acc. This means the fuel pump just keeps running when you have it KOEO, but it started.

So yeah, I'll leave it like this. It starts, it runs well and it seems way better than the EA motor ever was :D

Just washed up the engine bay again and got some water in the dizzy (as always fking happens) so now it hates life. Should be dried out fairly soon. Dan will be over soon as well - once he is here I'll jam the bonnet on and go get some petrol and take it for a proper spin. Still need a air filter and temperature sensor so i'll go get them from pick a part.

The Throttle body needs to be changed so I can put the EA TPS and she on too :( I hate changing TB's.

I would have said the ecu relay is cactus, once that thing goes you wont get spark or fuel, and the fuel pump relay wont activate either. I've had this happen to me a few times...

Ahh k. I went over to Doug's because it stalled with the current dodge setup on the way to Pick a Part and his house was on the way. He reckons the terminals in the plug to the ECU relay might be corroded or broken, because there seems to be a dodgy connection in the dodgy connection if that makes sense lol.

I did the TPS, just wired in the ED one and I set the base idle. Along with that I've put the air filter in and changed the temp sender. The motor had been in a car that was in a large front ender and one of the engine mounts had pierced the sump. I urethaned the hole but it still leaks a bit through the urethane.

Next week's to-do list is made :( Have to fix the leak and sort out the relay wiring.

It runs a lot better than it did this morning now that the idle is set and the TPS is all working.

Happy with how it all turned besides the minor issues that remain :)

Big ups to Dan and Gill for all their help!

Yay took it for a good spin and all systems are A OK. It's a lot punchier and smoother down low, and you don't hv to drop gears as much to get up hills. ED motor FTW.

Well worth it.

Good to hear :)

Didn't you notice the hole in the sump when the motor arrived, or didn't it look like it was leaking?

Removing sumps with engine in car FTMFL :(

Nah we noticed the hole when the motor came out of the wreck, but I thought we could fix it with urethane because we've plugged similar holes from turbo returns and the like using urethane. My guess is that I rushed it. Didn't clean it properly before appying the urethane and all that. Doug gave me some "liquid metal" or something to put over it so I'll have a crack with that.

It leaks a fair bit but stops after about an hour when the oil is all drained to the sump. Prob about a puddle the size of a ED hornpad.
