Best and Worst e-series purchases?

Postby mooseman » April 18th, 2012, 1:25 pm

I was thinking about how much fun it used to be when e-series at least held a slither of value.

About 4, maybe 5 years ago I picked up a manual ef xr6 from this guy named Niko IIRC. He was always wheeling and dealing on Fordmods...

I got the XR6 for $750 with no front end or FTRs because he needed it gone.

I sold the manual ECU on eBay for $462.50

I was literally dumbstruck when it got that high in a bidding way.

I ended up putting the entire driveline into my fairmont and still making like $500 off the rest.

Worst purchase would have to be getting a 4WD systems lokka in the very first group buy. It cost me a lot of money and my licence for about 20 minutes of fun...

1988 EA Fairmont Ghia. Bought for $1200 and was going to use it as spares for my newly smashed up EAII Ghia (back in 2002). Decided it was too good to wreck, gave it a general tidy, fitted a new steering rack, and sold it for $3500!

About 6 years ago I bought an EB GLi for $250 with 6 months reg. Drove it around for about 6 months before the engine packed in so replaced it with a low K EF wrecker motor, spent about $1300 for motor, tyres, rwc stuff including paying a years rego. Swapped it plus $1500 for an AU ute and ending up selling that few months on for $10k.

one of my favorites was buying an ef fairmont from qld for something like $3000 drove it every day
sold it for something like $3500 2 years latter and never serviced :P

iv only ever lost money on 1 out of about 20 cars and that was a brand new fg turbo.

decent money maker for me was wrecking an fully optioned 5 litre EB Ghia with wilson. the full leather and momo cruise wheel made its way into my ED which were pulling good money at the time.

i remember wheeling and dealing ED XR parts from wreckers cleaning them up a bit then putting them on ebay and making decent cash
had multiple ED momo wheels, ED XR fronts, lip spoilers, Tickford ECU's, ED XR interior which i swapped for an XY GT steering wheel, multiple 3.45 lsd diffs, Tickford heads etc.

Its a shame this stuff is worth fuk all now lol.

biggest loss was buying an EF Ghia nugget! while it did look nice as it had full EL kit, EL GT steering wheel, NL Concorde interior and a T5 i ended up spending about a 1k on it in repairs only to sell a few months later for a bit less than the original purchase price. it was from that day on i gave up on e-series.

Best and Worst e-series purchases?

Postby apoc » April 20th, 2012, 10:08 am

Best one for me, an EF gli. 500 bucks, had all new bushes, rack, ball joints, and a good engine. Drove like a new car. My eb was a pretty good pickup too.

Worst would be my ea, bought it from a lady in bruthen in 2005, fixed it all up nice. Went to register it, found out it ha a vp number on it, from an escort. Fail. Probably a grand down the drain there!

Thats similar to what happened to the guy I brought the EF XR6 from. He picked it up stolen recovered from the Auctions and spent heaps getting it RW and fixed up. When it went over the pits they found it had a cut and shut job on the rear end. You could still see the dodgy weld marks in the rear sills.

Best e series I've done was my burgandy ef futura, swapped it with superlows 17's and spooled 3.45 diff for a ke70 corolla I paid $550 for with a 5k cut springs and a welded diff

Worst is my current ef gli, paid $300 for it spent upwards of 3k getting it on the road most of it tied up in finding new parts for the manual conversion, 2days after its registered it popped a headgasket at an rbt and I got defected for it FML.....

If everything lights up you're done. If it's on fire you probably should have taken it to an auto electrician.

Rollin wrote:I'm undecided on both my best and worst buys - my clutch cost me damn near 2k, so it wasn't cheap, but it's got the lightest pedal this side of a barina, is easier to use than same, and will hold 3rd gear clutch dumps no worries at all :D

Other good buy would be my lokka - I paid $500 (I think) for a EA diff with 28 spline axles, lokka center and cortina 3.7 gears. IIRC I sold the gears for $150, the housing for $50 and the axles for another $50. So I paid $250 for a lokka and I haven't managed to bust it yet = epic win.

Two worst buys:

Clutch from direct clutches, $630 I think and lasted 5 days, they wouldn't even give me half a refund because they said I slipped it. Epic FUCKTARDS.

Other one was my (up until recently) drive car - an EB XR6.

Found it on ebay, looked great in the pics, offered the woman $2500 after many emails asking her specifically about the condition of the paint, body, mechanicals etc.

Flew to Sydney and got a train for an hour down to her hovel, car was absolutely fuct. Paint peeling everywhere, panels all different shades of red, handbrake inop, hazards inop, radio wouldn't turn off, LHF shock so badly buggered that the wheel could actually be seen bouncing when driving over cats-eyes, etc, etc, etc, etc. Massive list wrong with it.

Bought it anyway so I didn't have to spend another $360 on airfares home, spent probably another $1500 in parts alone (inc the auto shitting itself, and splitting first a heater hose then a bottom rad hose within days of each other) over the next 18 months just keeping it on the road, sold it for 1k recently with 6 months rego. I've got the bitches name burnt into my memory so badly I'll never forget.

Look at your car. Now back to mine. Now back to yours. Now back to mine. Sadly, yours isn't mine. But if you stopped buying dodgy cars and bought an ED, yours could be like mine. Look down. Back up. Where are you? ...You're on BoostedFalcon, reading the signature your signature could be like! Anything is possible when your car looks like my car... I'm on a computer.
