Hi all, lately my Xr has been dropping out of gear inbetween 1st and 2nd under full accelleration. When this happens the warning light on the dash comes on.and the speedo.drops out. Usually it pops baxk into gear however this time it is stuck inbetween gear :/ And for the.first time in a 18months I.can.turn.traction control on.. Car only.makes 320rwkw so im assuming its.something less thab a new gearset?

Cheers

Blake

Usually when this happens it jumps back into gear and I just have to.flick the ignition off then on to get the speedo working again. Has anybody heard of any faults to do with traction control or the speedo dropping out?

Sounds like an ABS fault. No speedo = ABS and Auto issues.

Thats interesting. I have had abs engage randomly whilr turning out of carparks etc before. Could I try disconnecting the sensors to cut the system out, or will that cause problems? cheers

if I have a crook battery and it's slow to start ill have no speedo and a 4k rev limit.

I had some similar gremlins in an F6, but it was more the speedo dropping out after the traction control tried to kick in and failed for some reason. I never worked out the problem but it went away by itself. The common things to check I found were;

- Ensure wheel sizes all the way around are the same (it's a given, but you never know)
- Tyre inflation
- Battery condition
- ABS sensors (mainly front)
- ABS pump (fault test through Ford)

My problem only occurred when breaking traction in 1st or 2nd gear. The traction control would try and do it's thing, but then wouldn't, the speedo would drop out and a whole lot of warning lights would flash. I'd have to re-start it to get it going again. It's fine now thou :/

Another ZF car I had, had a cactus box. WOT 1-2 manual up-shift would flare then free-rev, before changing to 2nd or sometimes not even leaving 1st. It's hard to tell with these cars whether it's a mechanical fault or electronic, where as in a BTR it's normally pretty obvious.

Make sure you clean your abs sensors. They gets cr ap on them and especially from machining the discs.

Signs of your auto needing a rebuild.
Has it still got the factory trans cooler on the side of the block?
You can now get decent size trans coolers that bolt Infront of the radiator with lines to the auto, it's the only way the auto last. The factory trans cooler has a hard time keeping up on a stock car.

ZF 6 speed runs a heat exchanger which is mounted on the passenger side of the sump. They cope pretty well on stock power, never had a problem with them. Had a 320rwkw R-Spec and that one didn't have any auto problems running well over stock power since delivery KM's. Most of their woes come from the coolant/trans-fluid mixing in the early radiators. Have heard of heat exhangers failing too thou :/

its actiually mounted to the block, i know its a water cooler unit, they are not the best. give it a good flogging and they start to over heat.. ive seen many zf autos fail due to over heating with the factory trans cooler.

It's mounted to the sump, Sinan. I've never really heard of issues in ZF's related to over-heating, they'd need to cop a pretty long flogging to get to a stage where you'd do damage. I extensively researched them when I had the issues I've previously mentioned. Not to mention I've owned about 9 ZF turbos over the last 3 years. But what would I know.

My bad. Got them
Both mixed up.
But they are all the same zf 6speed autos.

just thought Id update, after having an upgraded input shaft fitted for 12months or so, I snapped it again. Turns out an accumulator in the valve body was the cause of the box jumping out of gear and Dbangering my box. They found other issues aswell. long story short. $5665 later and thats not inc remove/install. So if your ZF is popping out of gear and u get odd ABS/speedo faults then start budgetting.
cheers

Ha! On the bright side, its a 500rwkw+ rated box now. I had been running low 4xxrwkws for a while now. It was well overdue.
