Well, I think I need a new Exhaust

Postby Russ. » February 9th, 2008, 8:47 pm

Driving to work one day this week the EB started making a shit sounding rattle when I was letting out the clutch at the lights, but didn't seem to do it when I wasn't putting load on the engine/gearbox so I'm thinking "shit, screwed bearing or something (i was thinking it was the thrust bearing)" but as it got worse over the next 2 days it began happening whenever the engine was revved, so I decided the cat had probably collapsed.
Then in the space of about 40 km's on suburban/freeway roads my car went from normal std. sounding exhaust to sounding like a truck, so this morning I crawled underneath to see what was going on and this is what I found:

The hole in the muffler is almost big enough to fit a tennis ball inside, and the cracks from the hole go right across the surface of the muffler! The shit thing is I haven't hit anything in the last few weeks, so I have no idea why it happened!
Its so loud that I don't bother putting the stereo on anymore (thinking about wearing earplugs while I'm driving till its fixed, its farkn loud!) and the vibration thru the floor made my feet go numb on the freeway coming home last night!

Oh well, looks like I'll finally get that 2.5 inch system on it!

I don't think beer cans, exhaust putty and hose clamps will patch that muffler now :P

With exhausts, the steel gets weak spots after smashing against stuff a few times, then the heating/cooling of the exhaust eventually causes them to crack. As you said, perfect excuse for a bigger one, 2.5" costs just as much as a stock type exhaust anyway.

The deal was when Jared (onereded) blew his motor with the turbo we'd use it to destroy mine...But the dirty prick destroyed the turbo first! Ah well, at least he's giving me his old 2.5" catback so I can still afford to fix the other major problem the EB's been developing (clutch slipping like all fuk and I'm out of adjustment on the cable)

Katelyn disagrees with u about the sound, she won't ride in it now! Its staying the way it is until we hit your ED up for parts!
More brews next time, I'm sure next time I come around Ivan will me more than happy to re-enact the scenes of last night for my amusement!
