Xr8 bonnet hump add-on? opinions?

Postby Rhodseyy » July 30th, 2012, 3:43 pm

Hey everyone, i've seen a few el's and so forth with the ba xr8 bonnet hump, i am told that they are riveted down and filled in with fibreglass because the bonnet is such a thin metal you cant weld it without warping the bonnet, does anyone have experienced opinions on how to go about doing this and maybe some what to and not to do's? all opinions are welcome cheers.

most are fibreglass bulges, not steel. so welding isnt an option.

you can weld a bulge on, but unless you're an epicly skilled welder & metal worker, you'll need to use filler/glass to blend it in.

fibreglass bulges have a tendancy to crack where they are moulded on, but its heavily dependant on the quality of the work. some have been done for a number of years without issues.

yeh i thought as much, one of the guys at tafe has it done but his had it when he bought the car and his had it for quite a while and there doesn't seem to be any cracks or anything showing. thanks for the confirmation :).

does anyone know anyone that does this kind of work, am quite keen on getting this done.

Speaking of bulges, I seen a black ba-bf today at a frankston panel shop with a fg bulge on it, looks heaps better and bigger then the BA hump.

Does anyone even sell them as fiberglass yet? I honestly hadn't noticed a difference until now, but never looked for one either.

the FG one seems to suit the XR/GLi style bonnet better due to it being smoother, where as the fairmont bonnet suits the BA bulge as it lines up well with the existing rise.

Knowing the quality Marty the owner requires, and the quality Dave (at Gas78) the painter the colour match would be perfect (in the
flesh that is)...

As said Alfa motorsport do a range incorporating a variety of different sized reverse cowl scoops so I have no doubt they'd be able
to do the BA/FG bulge...

Yeah I know they do a whole lot of shit, bonnets, panels etc. I need a reverse cowl bonnet for mine I've spoken to them already, and every man and his dog sells BA bulges was wondering about the FG as I rather like the look on the red XR.. I really shouldn't be asking though lol

Definitely works better with the EL XR vents than it probably would with the EF style ones. Best thing I liked about that bulge was it was functional, it has a pretty serious 363w under there haha

xr vents set it off in my bias opinion. Even though mine turned out good and hasn't cracked at all since I've done it I'd still rather have a full fibreglass bonnet or a full steal one..

i wouldnt recommend putting it on your eb bro, ea to ed are (IMO) to box shaped to have a buldge on it, ef/el are more rounded, which is why it suits better.

but he its all about being different so go for it :D lol
