is an exhaust an exhaust an exhaust??

Postby XR6 Hulk » February 12th, 2008, 12:13 pm

Hi,

I have a EL Fairmont 5.0 auto, 3.45 diff gears, K&N Panel, hurricane headers, factory twin cats, factory y piece, factory 2.5 inch system but mufflers have been replaced with hooker aero chamber and hotdog resonator.

Would any sort of cat back system perform better than my current setup. Engine is stock. Im looking for a few extra horsepower but not so concerned about sound. If my exhaust flows well, would another exhaust make any difference??

There are many answers here http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthread.php?t=11208323 :)

Your biggest problem with your system (if any, it sounds pretty good as is) *could* be the factory y-piece, it's not the prettiest bit of gear around. However you mention "factory 2.5 inch system"... Are you certain it's not 2.25 inch?

The V8 has factory 2.5 inch. I kid you not, I got out the tape measure.

some exhaust shops say, change it for a 2.5 inch sports system. cant see how theres will flow any better than mine, stock pipes different mufflers. I would be pulling the stainless pipes off and replacing them with their cheap mild steel bubble wrapped sports exhaust.

My std exhaust looked a lot smaller than the 2.5" exhausts I've seen on the sixes...

Stainless stock pipes? Nope, definitely not from the factory. I'd say you already have an aftermarket system then.

Isnt a twin 2.5 inch system a little big for the stock windsor. Wouldnt it loose power? For a stock car ive been told that purely for performance a 2.5 inch single system is the best all rounder.

twin 2.25 would probably suit better than twin 2.5 (2.5s would sound better though!). Single 2.5 offers more bang for buck, but only coz you're spending less buck.
