10's for $5k...possible

If you already had an EF/EL/AU would running 10's for $5k be anywhere near possible? How would you do it?

thanks

sure bruz!!! buy a 2nd hand t51r and manifold, some decent injectors, massive plenum tune it on roo16, ba xr6t motor, cheap full cooler kit and pipes, find some full slicks and have fun with 1 pass!

then come back and tourch the car cause it would all be completely fked. :D

copy this and Buy all parts second hand.
Pretty sure you can get close enough parts wise.
He done more than one pass.

i reckon i could do it :)
wouldn't be too reliable but itd be possible with the right combo of parts and all labour done by the owner...

5 grand worth of nitrous, fuel system, converter and big sticky tyres.

No.

Impertas car has probably $4000 of gearbox alone, and so did gillys.

The pure fact is that parts like ECUs, injectors and decent quality turbos is just a start.

The key to running good times is a well setup gearbox which I'll give the benifet of $2500 second hand.

wouldnt use an EF EL, would go for an early falcon, maybe an XK or XL wagon.
4.0 EB motor with a 2nd hand turbo set up, 5 speed with a pintara (auto) 4.11 diff grafted in.

set of slicks, 2nd hand gas research setup and no intercooler.

have to go close......

XK-XL Falcons aren't exactly cheap though, a Cortina would be a cheaper alternative. Plus 205's are pretty much the limit on a Fish-shop unless you fit tubs, and get a diff shortened to suit. $5k gone.

If the starting car is free, I'd say get an XR6T, buy a 9" grinder and 20 cutting discs, cut most of the car off, then spend the remaining $4,500 on a fuel system, cooler, slicks and crank the boost.

Top Gear had the right idea with the Beetle v 911T Vert test they did.
I don't know if you could hire a chopper to lift a car 400m off the ground for under 5k though.

I think the factory auto could JUST get you into the 10's (with mods/convertor) I don't think you need 6 boost manifolds, quality turbos to run a 10. Maybe if you wanted to run meeting after meeting for a couple of years

It can probably be done if you can do all the fabrication and tuning yourself and if you can build your own box, but everything would still be standard i.e ECU, bottom end and a BTR, you'd just have to pray that the box/motor hold up, and you'd be tuning it yourself with a J3.

Like Aaron said above, the gearbox is the key to running good times and if you can get a BTR to hold up for a few runs (and while you're tuning it) with a big stall then it might be possible.

For the average person, hell no.

BTW it'd be shit and mega unreliable IMO.

EDIT, I just done a quick price list and came to $4k in materials and that's without including a wideband kit to tune J3, no dyno time and didn't include parts for the gearbox rebuild, and probably other stuff i've missed (off the top of my head I didn't include stuff like silicon joiners, boost gauge, new gaskets, new headbolts or a after market cam)

you can buy a GT35 copy or bigger for $200 off ebay, and if you really wanted, a powerglide for a couple of hundred in standard form which i think should cop a 10sec pass without transbrake etc...
a manifold cost **** all to weld yourself, gas research for 400rwkw can be done for $500 if you get the parts second hand, pistons and rods from a BF+ XR6t etc etc this gives you an idea of my thinking towards this subject.
i reckon i could be done, but itd be sketchy lol

i think powerskids in top gear are the new 10sec 1/4 mile pass anyway :D

A $200 powerglide would turn into $1000 or more when you consider a custom converter, custom bellhousing, transmount, tail shaft and shifter, and that'll be a standard glide with who knows how many kms.

buy 10 dollar crow bar, and a $4990 time machine

go back in time with crow bar to when gillys ea was complete, smash drivers window, hotwire car and drive it to the track and run a 10

Yeah any conversion (motor or box) is going to kill the budget. You'd have to gamble on the BTR....or the second BTR....or the third

Buy flux capacitor for $4.5K, install yourself and get sticky tyres then run 9's.

i think at the end of the day the question would be, would you want to own a car that could possibly run 10sec 1/4s after only $5k spent on it? lol
hell even a few thousand more would make it 11ty times more safer!
look at the **** that used to go on about 10sec for 10k and see if you can find many successful attempts, that might give you an idea of the feasibility.

I think you can do reliable 10’s for 10k providing you do most of the work yourself and get good second hand parts, you could probably even crack 9’s IMO if you do it right from the start.

Why on earth would an XK or XL wagon be the most suitable candidate for this?!

People say and ask some fucked up shit on these forums.

In the one thread we've had the suggestion/idea of 10's for $5k, a time machine to steal a car, an XK or XL being ideal candidate for a 10 second car, a flux capacitor and some other random shit.

Inb4 I delete my own account.

I think the closest thing to it would be Mike's dyno ea. Though it had a 3-4 grand gearbox, so sorta blows out a bit.

What misk said is right too, do you really wanna be doing 200ks in a cheap shit heap.

I think you could get close if you had done it before. If its your first time building a car that runs 10's I'd say no way.

Lol @ people calling allmtr a dreamer. With alot of 'right time, right place' and not paying labour, it could be done if you can get the BTR to hold on.

cos i've done it before. (in 1997/98)

the XK XL fords weigh fuckall, they adapt all kinds of motors easily, leaf spring rear end, good weight distribution, good weight transfer on launch, and the wagons arent sought after (the thread was assuming you owned the car)

i used a left hand drive coupe last time with a crate 350 chev 375hp motor with a 150 shot of NOS and a nine inch diff from an XY wagon.
trans was a turbo 350 with a manual valve body and a 4000rpm stall.

cost $8K but did run a 9.20 @ 144mph

matt.

buy a standard vn commodore cut the springs, add unit sticker and chev badges, remove all but one muffler and chuck some twentys on the front with stockys on the rear and also a monster tacho for good measure and you'd be able to run 9's according to most of the bogans where i live...

In all seriousness.
I think it could come close
up the boost on the turbo big ext gate turbo
std box and converter
and $500 nitrous kit ( 200hp hit )and C16 fuel

Make sure you nail it on the first pass as it may be a bit fumey !! after that.

In 1998 a Zone 3 concession on Melbourne's PT cost 80c. It's like $1.60 now. A 600ml coke was $1.20, it's $3.80 now...

Lightest falcons are xe gl and ea gl. Everything else is a fat mc fatty in comparison.

lulwat?

Fish-Shops are 1100-ish kg. Even an XY GHTO is only 1500kg or so.

[edit] - Having a quick look, the EA GL was the second heaviest base-model Falcon at that point, only the XC was heavier, and it would be lighter with an XE alloy head X-Flow fitted.

I've been called worse...

Why are people assuming the car is a shitter????

log manifold $100 or $400 for 2nd hand Snort
Turbo $3-500
Injectors $300
ECU $500 (Wolf in classifieds)
FMIC $175
Exhaust tubing and muffler $150
Cooler piping $100
Weld diff
Auto elect mods $25
Convertor $400

See, easy...

No one considered a roll cage?

Ya run a 10 it's roll cage or no more runs

I've never been in an e series or x series that felt safe at 150 kmh let alone 200 plus

If the car price not included I think a blown gen 3 could do it

Vx ss turbo do a 10 for 5k or come damn close

What's parfeys budget on the turbo 5 litre so far?
